MPC60 SCSI partitioning / backup / disk maintenance?

Tried searching but couldn't really find anything strictly related to the subject..

The topic pretty much says it all, I'm a bit curious how the rest of you MPC60 SCSI-users deal with this. At the moment I'm using an external ZIP100 drive with my 60 and partitioning the discs at something like 4 or 5 partitions. At this rate my first disk with samples will be filled in a months time or something, and I'm not feeling totally comfortable with the concept of using zip disks. I want some reduncancy.

How (if in any way) do you perform backups? I've read about using cross-partitions which both mpc-editor and the MPC can see, but that's not what I would like to achieve. I'd like to mirror whatever zip disk I have compiled, all partitions. I can't see any logical way of doing this other than by burning a CD rom image of the contents of a SCSI hard disk for instance (much like you do with a regular "old" Akai S1000/S3000 sampler to create a sample-CD), but can you also do this with a zip disk on a PC SCSI chain? And even if you can, will the 60 be able to read this CD from a CD reader on its SCSI chain? If yes, then all good and that's what I'll do. But has anybody tried this?

If it's not possible then I guess the only way to perform backups is to fill up the memory of the 60 with samples, then saving them onto another zip disk or whatever media, then clear the memory and filling it up with another 1.5 MB worth of samples and keep on doing that for like an eternity every now and then..

Ok, I've now searched so many times and not found anything, neither here or by google..

I guess having got no information about this at all means it's probably something that nobody has done because it can't be done. I'm trying to get the MPC60 to recognize a scsi-cd rom since I just made burnt CD's out of raw disk images from my hard drives, but it seems impossible.

I just can't get the MPC to find the CD-rom. It's obvious that they communicate - the CD-reader spins up when I'm trying to set the ID, but it never finishes. Same cables and terminators works for other stuff like two external hard drives, but I just CAN'T get it to regognize the cd-rom, regardless of scsi-ID. Have tried three different cd readers now and all seem the same. I can't find anything about limitations in this area in the Roger Linn 3.10 manual either.

Has anybody ever made this work, or is it perhaps not even supposed to work?

I already know how to perform backups! If you're unable to provide any feedback to the question at hand - if it indeed is possible to use a cd-reader with the 60 - why bother wasting your time with your neverending oneliners?

Relying on a disk system with hardware that hasn't been manufactured or supported for the last ten years doesn't seem ideal in the long run, especially since the zip system isn't exactly known for its reliability. At some point, obtaining zip drives will be a problem. And scsi card-readers are not really that common, you certainly can't just go out and buy them in any random computer hardware store.

Because of this, the idea of accumulating bigger, read-only archives on cd seems makes sense at least to me - media will always be available, 2nd hand scsi cd-readers are cheap and more easily available. But if it's impossible to use a scsi CD-rom with the 60, then fine.

Well ... you have at least backed up a disk to an image.

...and it seems now your enquiry is a little bit different to what you first posted.

The MPC60 will not read a RAW disk sector image that is a reburned sector clone on CD-ROM.

The MPC60 sees the CD-ROM drive as a device with the an incorrect SCSI BLOCK UNIT SIZE.

The S1XXX/S2XXX/S3XXX series samplers are different in this regard.

The MPC60 supports SCSI storage device that have 512 byte per sector SCSI BLOCK UNIT sizes.

SCSI BLOCK UNIT sizes of 1024 BPS and 2048 BPS ( CD-ROM ) are not supported.

If your CD-ROM can be forced into 512 bytes per sector SCSI BLOCK UNIT sizes then it might work. ( some older CD-ROM mechanisms have such a feature )

The SCSI CD-ROM drive used will play a big part in this.

A model that supports the "HARD DRIVE" SCSI BLOCK UNIT size of 512 bytes per sector will be a good place to start.
