Just Got JJ OS1, plan to get OS2 but need opinions

Hey guys, I've only owned my 1000 for a short time, I've had 2000 classic and 2000XL for a while,

after playing with the free JJOS for one day I decided to buy OS1.

I plan to go all the way in the upgrade path, but here is what i want to know:

Would it be good to learn the new features of OS1 before moving on to OS2 or should I upgrade to OS2 right away so that I don't have to learn all-over again? What I mean is, is OS1 a good precursor to OS2, or are they so different that I'd be wasting my time learning OS1 first?

Also, It seems the only thing I might miss in OS2 is autochromatic assignment of programs (I know it's back in OS2XL) but what do people use in plase of this feature? Is that where the "Programs for musical instruments" comes into play?

Also, what is your opinion on the stability of the OS2 builds? I am under the assumption that since OS1 is on version 4.99 and OS2 is only at 1.27 this means OS1 is a more mature build and most of the bugs have been ironed out already, where OS2 is still young and the coder may have introduced new bugs and is still working them out.

What do you guys think?

I already know Lampdog says go straight to OS2XL but I would like a second, third, and fourth opinion.

in my opinion, os 2 is the best os.
it's much more stable than 2xl. also, 2xl crippled some important features (q-links).

i would just upgrade to whatever os you plan to use & then spending your time learning there.
what if you get really used to something in os 1 & then it's been removed/changed in one of the later os's?

Here's what I learned about the JJ OS's from having both the 2500 and 1k.
If you would have started out early on then what Sooty said is the way to look at it, but if you are jumping in now, go XL.
We got to grow with the OS as it changed and saw the whys and hows of each of them.
You have to remember even the now simplistic free JJ OS was incredible when first offered compared to the Akai OS.
Learn XL and grow with it, it will prevent you from whinning about removed or crippled features since you never saw them.
Once you are thorough on XL see if you feel it's missing anything, if you do look at OS1 or OS2 to see if they do then you can always check them out but you will be doing it with a perspective of what you loss from XL.

Both OS1 and OS2 fall short of certain XL functions but they both have some user specific functions that are part of certain people workflows so they stay anchored to them.



Not much chance of the XL enhancements ending up in either of the other OS versions.

The Arp and Chords functions in XL suck, IMO.

My problem with OS2 is that it only has one filter per sample.

I use my E-MU e6400 Ultra when I need it.

Yeah, when I got my first MPC 2000 it made me wish I had my S3000XL back for melodic stuff, but seriously though?

Seriously. I don't consider the MPC's sampler to be anything more than a drum sampler(I wouldn't own an MPC it if it weren't for the kick ass sequencer). I use it for single hits. I never trigger polyphonic sounds on it from a keyboard. I turn to a real sampler like the E-MU for that. But that's just me, I'm sure it works fine for others.

Seriously: INST programs replace autochromatic programs.

JJ has made the 1k a much more serious sampler. Still not an ASR or EMU, but way more capable.

No need to use autochromatic assignment with JJOS2XL or JJOS2... just make an INST program instead of a DRUM program and it's all done automatically for you.
Your sample gets mapped through all keys automatically.
The INST program also allows you to assign specific key ranges to individual samples throughout your entire keyboard range.
This is on mpc2500 and I think the mpc1000 is exactly the same.
I use JJOS2XL myself.. I really need quantise strength and two filters.

imma still lovin the quality of the XL.......
even though thee os2 is still the more stable os.........

everyone has different opinions based on what features are most important to them.
os2xl brought a bunch of new stuff over os 2, but also took a bunch of stuff away.

ultimately, only you can answer the question of what's the best os for yourself.

what i would do is get os 2 and use it for a while. get familiar with it & make some projects with it.
THEN - you can install os 2xl without paying for it. everything will work except you won't be able to save anything.
work with it for awhile and see if the new features of 2xl are worth it over what you lose from os 2.

in the end, you can have os 2 & 2xl both installed side by side on the mpc & then boot into whichever one you want to work in.
i myself have both installed. i spent a couple months with 2xl & did some projects in it.
ultimately tho, i decided 2 was the better one for me. so i went back to it full time & haven't looked back.

2xl is still there, tho... if i ever get the burning desire to use arp & chord.

Last night I was overwhelmed with all the features in OS1, I think it's a done deal though, I will buy OS2 tonight. Autochromatic is not that great anyways, I still need a good external synth for basslines and stuff. Thanks for all your helpful input guys.
