wow just discovered how powerful qlinks can be for improvisational jamming... started messing with tempo, cutoff and pitch mod using qlinks and outboard effects from a kaoss pad while playing a sequence, i got some crazy results. for instance, i added some panning and delay to an otherwise stale saxaphone sample, i then set the qlink1 pitch mod between -100 and +100 , added a lpf cutoff between the same values and before you know it i killed a half hour jamming on a four bar loop!! ... i think im on the verge of dumping my mv8800 and use the mpc 1000 as my dedicated sampler... ive had this thing for three years now and every time i mess with it extensivley i discover something new.. plus compared to the mv its easier to navigate...only drawbacks are the lack of ram memory and 32 voice polyphony other than that the 1000 is perfect... especially with jjos 2xl edition of course.

Come on now... like 23 minutes of sample time isn't good enough??

The polyphony does show it's ugly nature now that the 1k has picked up features.

The reason the Q-Links are so important is because of the limited external CC's.
It's the only way you can get down and dirty with realtime control of the 1k.

you do know that 2XL majorly gimped the q-links, right?
you can only use 1 at a time, and only record 1 type of variation in a sequence.
if you try and record your tweaks with the second q-link, it will just WIPE OUT everything you previously recorded with q-link 1.

this is the #1 reason i ditched 2XL.

in os 2, you can have both q-links active simultaneously, and record two types of automation with q-link 1 set to REALTIME & q-link 2 set to NOTE ON (it has to be set like that, btw... 1=REALTIME & 2=NOTE ON).

i begged JJ to fix this in 2XL but he said it was impossible, so i said adios to 2XL.
so just sayin', if you're down with the q-links, os 2 is the way to go.

q-links are indeed powerful stuff, especially since you can record seperate tweaks for each track.
so put all your drum sounds & loops on their own tracks & then just go one by one and tweak the hell out of them.

just rehearse while the sequence loops until you get something sounding good, then hit that OVERDUB key.
don't like the tweaks that you just recorded? just hit UNDO SEQ. easy.

sooty im with you on this, ive used both q links on os2 in the past on a couple of tracks and one of the drawbacks to xl is a crippled version of the slider function. this is why anyone who plans on using the qlinks for live improvisation would be better suited to use os2.

totally in agreement with you but it is nice to have a shitload of headroom dont you think??? anyhow my major gripe is the polyphony issue, 64 is a hell of alot nicer than 32... but it just forces you to be more creative within the boundaries of limitation.

ha ha let me politik for a second by rephrasing that the 1000 is perfect as long as you have all of the jj operating systems on your hard drive.. allowing you to switch back and ??? ..... ooooh nevermind....its a great machine end of statement.

Sooty, IMO part of the reason JJ hasn't jumped up and address the return of the "Q" is because the majority of users just seem to not use the them.
Not sure why, but it appears that way based on many post around here.

It seems that people would either want the old "Q" back or for the 1k to being able to respond to external CC's.

I know using the MV with an external controller is really nice since it gives you direct hands on to a lot of parameters at once.
This would be really nice for the 1k if it can't get the old "Q" back.

I do want both. It would be really cool if there was some kind of mapping system in the MPC that can "learn" a CC input and map it to a function.

Another idea was if you could hold down the "After" and press A, B, C or D for different premapped functions. Then you could have 8 functions on the 1000 at your fingertips, 16 on the 2500.

You can have up to 2 q-links per program in 2xl (one note-on and one realtime). That's up to 198 different q-links in total for internal sounds. Just change the PGM field in the q-links window. If you change PGM to off in that window, you can have another 2 to use, so that would be useful for sending MIDI CCs to external modules.

Grand total: 200 q-links!

If you want more than 2 q-links in one program, you can copy the program, or you can copy one or more pads to a new program.

thanks didnt know this was possible... any chance of putting up a video example of this??

No camcorder... But it's simple just make two copies of the same program, put 'em on two separate tracks, then on each track, hit mode-pad1, set up the q-links like you want. Then go to track 3, set the program to off, hit mode-pad1, ans change them again.

A lot of people apparently don't know this lil trick.

The only thing that I miss from os2 is the grid edit for q-links.

I'm sitting here playing with it now. You can overdub multiple midi cc's on a single track. All you have to do is set up a q-link with a cc number, record slider movements, then change the q-link to a different cc number and overdub more slider movements. This opens up a lot of possibilities for ppl who use external modules, samplers, plugins, or daws with their 1k.
