Maybe I just end up in weird record spots, but If Im not w/ a friend. I never see other beat makers when Im out digging. All I ever see are old record collector dudes. At times I feel like Im the only one still samplin. haha Maybe people are just finding easier ways to sample, youtube, etc...

I think it depends where you're from and the spots you dig. I never see other people that "look like" beatmakers too. But I guess here in germany are much less diggers and it seem that they dont really hit the thrift stores. I like the **** up thrift stores with massiv of yunk in there.
Nobody (but me :)) goes in there and the records are mostly 50 cent to 1 Euro.
I found some ill stuff in these stores. When I'm out in another city I always search for that kind of stores.

I remember going to one of my favorite record shops where I do strictly hip-hop/R&B vinyl shopping (they don't really carry old records), and I 'm picking up stacks of vinyl. This Japanese kid comes in, and he's fiercely flipping through records. I'm talking flip,flip,flip,flip,flip...stop/pick, flipflip, flip, flip. I'm amazed as how fast he's just skipping through these records, it's like he has a tunnel vision and knows what record it is he sees as soon as he flips to it. So he's got a nice little stack and he's catching up to the rows where I am.

Now I dunno about anybody else, but when I'm in a record store I don't like anyone to pass me and get to rows that I haven't seen yet, so I speed up a little, and finally make it out of the hip-hop section and go to R&B. He catches up to me and sees my stack of records, and starts diggin through them. I'm like "hold up dude, these are mine". He says "sorry, but do you mind if I look through your records". Being that they're hip hop records (no secrets), I let him look through them. He finds that I picked up Noreaga's Holiday Jumpoff II double red/green vinyl (Blood Money 2 & 3/Oh No Remix/Play That Sh** Remix), Ghostface Supreme Clientele Instrumental, and some other stuff. He asked "where did you find those"? I tell him "aw man these were the last ones". He offers me $25.00 for the Noreaga, and $50.00 for the Ghostface. I tell him the Nore is a double and he says ok, $50.00. I take his cash and continue digging. He passes me in the racks, and goes to pay for his vinyl, and leaves. So I go underneath the racks to the secret stash, and pull out the records I sold to him and put 'em back in my pile.

This happened a few other times at that record spot (not the same guy), so whenever I'm diggin', and I spot a Japanese/Asian guy, I know he's relentless with the vinyl.

Is that racial profiling??

Truthfully bro, when I'm diggin, all my attention is on the vinyl I'm searching for. It's like I got blinders/tunnel vision and staying focused on nothing but what's in front of me and what the person on either side of me is pulling out of the bins. I couldn't tell you what the person looks like but I could name all the records they had pulled out to look at.
Sheeit... My own wife doesn't even bother me when I get in my "mental zone" of digging. 8)

This has happened to me before. Funny thing is I find myself trying to cop a peek at other peoples stacks, curious to know what they found. :)

One time I was digging at this store called Cue here in Philly (it's closed since). Anyway, theses this video online of 9th Wonder digging there and talking to the owner and they seem to know each other. So I pick up some records (the only one that I distinctly remember getting that time was Stones Throw "Rhythm Trax") and, having just seen this video, I ask the owner about it when I go to pay. He says "Yeah, he comes through every time hes in the area. He was just here two days ago actually."

Haha, I still wish I had gone two days earlier...maybe got some digging insight from 9th.

haha! exactly what i said! Digging is hilarious! I go to a place in the UK called Cash Converters, or more commonly known as Crack Converters, as its where some less than amicable people go mugging and then cash in their winnings. I see some crazy ass people there, and sometimes even the drunken ramblings of an old smelly bum influence what im going to buy. Everything there is between 50p-£1.50 and it has everything from soul to big band to classical to some GangStarr shyt i found, even coped Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons vinyl for 25p the other day! My town has nothing ever goin on in it but i can always rely on Crack Converters to brighten up my day!

When you bump heads with other diggers / beatmakers , it can pay off , especially if theyr'e more experienced . I can count ateast 3 times when somebody was either there before me or into a section I didn't get to and they'll be like " check this out , this is yada , yada with the fat drums but I already got it " So I make it a point to never hog a record I already have , especially if I got doubles . I was in this basement full of 45's in a spot in DC that's closed now and the dudes that run Crazy Beat records in London where snatchin up all types of joints , but they hit me off with "Nefertiti" by Wisdom . Another time I was in this other spot and I ran into the dude who according to Diamond D - started the term "diggin " no bs .... read the Wax Poetics interview with Diamond D . We rapped for a minute and talked beats but that was a good 7 years ago .

For me I don't mind seeing other diggers because I think I'm the only digger in Puerto Rico. Most times its old people I see at the spots and they taunt and tease me telling me "what do you know about that? that was before your time" or "Now you young cats wanna know about real music huh? Tired of that (Terribly mimics the Bboy stance and makes fart sounds trying to beat box)" I hate when they do that.

But when a real digger comes in, its like a game of chess because he knows what you're there for and I know why he's there. So you make your move but watching him at the same time. Making sure he doesn't reach that sweet spot of the bin. If he passes it by then I rush in, but if he stays at that area for a while then I get nervous, but I try not to show it. I don't want him to know he's near nirvana, so I go to the common section and play it like "Right here's the sh!t!!" and if he takes the bait, I'm good. Dude would be staring where I'm at and loses concentration, thats when I walk to another section and I can see him slowly walking to that part I was at. Then I attack and raid the jewels and be like "Checkmate MUHFKR!!!"

when you been diggin for a long time or see many records which he probably does cause they just buy to go back to japan and sell them . they look for stuff they havent seen before or stuff thats going to make them money , they know money records.

no, i try not to get close to other beat makers cause they willl take what your after. this is a sampling sport you have to dig for yourself not for others or buy what others buy.i got my own taste in music i know what i'm after.
plus i have to compete with dj's thats hard enuff already.
