I just bought the Akai MPC 1000, and when i load a sample and then try to change it's tempo, my MPC says "Insufficient Memory!!!"
I only uploaded a few samples.. Does that mean I just need a new Compact Flash card for it? If so, does anyone have a specific recommedations reguarding the best brand and model to purchase?

Sorry if this sounds kinda rookie-ish, but i really don't know how these things tick yet.

Thanks

Your samples are too large for the memory of the machine.
Max out your memory in the machine and learn to manage your samples.

The CF Card has nothing to do with how many samples you can load, it's just for storage.

Make sure your Auto-Load is turned OFF.
Check to see how much memory you have installed.
Check the size of the samples you are trying to load.

I have the Auto-Load OFF.

I don't have many samples on it and most aren't more than 10 seconds long.

If my MPC says "INSUFFICIENT MEMORY!!" What does this mean exactly? I need more RAM or a bigger Compact Flash Card?

I've looked around at local music equipment stores, electronic stores (best buy/radio shack) and even camera stores, but I can't find any of the compact flash cards that were listed in in the forums on this site. Where do you buy flash cards? E-bay?

Yes. Should I delete unwanted (stock) samples that come with my MPC?

Insufficient memory means just that, insufficient memory.

RAM, it's RAM.

10 seconds is a LONG time. That is just a REALLY big sample, to much for your mpc and the RAM, it's RAM, that it has in it.

If you wanna save the stock sounds somewhere then do that, then delete them from the card.

The samples aren't very long.

I loaded like maybe 2 minutes of samples (that's total time of all uploaded samples)..

I'm just surprised that an almost $1000.00 piece of hardware can't handle a few minutes of samples.

So in order to open up some more memory I just delete WAV files from the my Compact Flash card? And i can delete the stock samples? There are a lot of built-in percussion and sample sounds that i don't want. Should I just delete them?

Memory is RAM.

Memory is NOT cf

Samplers are dynamic not time based recorders. You need to re-think your
whole approach on the "$1000" machine. If you don't like it take it back.

I can't tell you what to delete, that's your choice.

Figure it out, make a decision and act on it.

If memory is NOT CF, then what is the purpose of the CF? Sorry if that sounds idiotic, but i really don't know anything about MPs (other than how to make beats).

Have you ever purchased any upgrades for your MPC? As in extra RAM or CF cards? Do you still have all the stock sounds on your MP?
I'm just wondering how most people work with MPs..

cf is for storage of your beats/ samples... i never thought that i would say this here.... but maybe you read the manaual before getting your mp....

CF/HDD is storage. RAM is memory. The difference between sample storage and sample memory is like the difference between the chicken in your freezer and the chicken in the oven. One you got on ice for later (storage - you know, like storage...), and the other you're using to cook up some heat right now (memory)... So the same way you take your chicken out of the freezer and stick it in the oven, you load your samples from storage (CF/HDD) into memory (RAM).

Soooo.... To cook more chicken you need a bigger oven. To load more samples you need more memory (RAM). To store more chicken you need a bigger freezer. To store more samples you need more storage (a bigger CF or HDD).

Make sense now?

16MB is about 3 minutes of sample time in mono, and about 1.5 minutes in stereo... 128MB is about 24 minutes of sample time in mono, and about 12 minutes in stereo. Either realize the limitations, adjust your workflow, and manage your samples better, or spend $20 on RAM.
