Well in my 'those days' it was 128 or 256kb of unexpandable memory, and you were just glad to be able to load one 4 bar loop...

don't get me wrong, i'm fully aware that we can make dope beats using less than 16mb, but it can only go so far without you throwing away time deleting what you don't need and loading in what you do and other such things. it shouldn't be seen as a bad thing that users don't want to spend time doing these things - and i completely respect you old school mothers who had to cope with less than this measley amount of memory - but i just think that in the old school days technology wasn't as developed and people had to just deal with it. today we shouldn't have to spend hours doing what we don't essentially need to do, with technological advances such as nanotechnology on the horizon. i wanna load one billion mb of drums and try them all out RIGHT NOW GODDAMMIT! simple as, really.

these days, oh, these days.

*edit*

this kind of answers your question aswell. a 4 bar loop. says it all! leave it for the cavemen, i repeat.

It really is simple, get a computer. Then you won't have to spend those fruitless hours in front of prehistoric-technology. It's all available at both a lower and higher price than a MPC. Nontheless you went and got MPC's, facts and specs in full sight, and now this strange crying about inferior capabilities?

Yeah, and the has-been-cavemen with their stick 'n' stone-MPC's can leave the nanotechnology and gb's of samples-right-at-your-fingertips-mentality to the youngsters, coked up on energy drinks, habitually illiterate and with the attention span and short term memory of way less than 256kb.
We're truly facing a beautiful tomorrow...

tell that to all the best hip-hop producers that use hardware as opposed to software. in all factuality, most probably use both. but now you've stepped into a completely different subject, guess your attention span must have dipped, even with the advantage of not having to...

spend fruitless hours in front of prehistoric-technology

maybe you should upgrade to an mpc? got RAM?

you should prob go the software/pc route like ableton, very easy to do what your saying, but you will find that it makes beats take 10 times longer because while your still "auditioning drums and not making the decision what to use, the 16 mb mpc user is already arranging patterns into a song

unlimited choice options
, leads to no quick choice being made because you always will think a better drum/sound might be in next folder

you know what i mean, less sample choices leads to quicker beats completion.

before i ever had an mpc i had a 12 sec gemini sampler built into a dj mixer and a 24 sec gemini sampler.. when i got my first 16mb mpc like 3 minutes of sampling it was like holy shit

that billion mb of drums was just me being silly man, i cope fine with the ram i have, in fact i never truly use all of the 126 (or w/e it is) and i doubt i'd ever switch to software. it's just no FUN. :)

Compared to many strange and obviously wrong statements in this thread the above is not that bad, although very strange.

Please explain why we in "these" days have a greater need to load a retarded amount of samples into RAM and why the people of (what I guess is) "those" days didn't have that need.

Well, apart from the obvious fact that we can do it these days which is a direct consequence from the fact that a sampler "these" days comes with 16 mb (expandable to 128 mb) stock RAM as opposed to 2 mb (expandable to 32 mb) which were the fact in "those" days I got my first Akai.

One more thing that might support your thesis is that most people seem to have one or more of different kinds of attention disorders "these" days, which probably explain the need as well as the basis of this whole thread.

Sounds like the disappointed duo should look into computers.

oh but the 1000 looks so much sexier than a mac book pro on stage.... imo if your using your mpc to just make bedroom beats and lay down tracks to dump into a computer later, than having anything more than a few mb of sampling time is not necessary, however if you plan on using it live (and we are afforded with the luxury of fitting big ideas into small boxes) then having enough ram to record all of the audio from scarface is not a bad option
