Just got this on eBay...

"Oh shit" WTF is this guy thinking?" you might think now. But I just got this sweeeet AKAI tape deck on eBay and I just wanted to share with you! I'm really enjoying myself like a child now. Still thrilled by this "entering-my-bid-15-seconds-before-end-of-auction" thing!

I'm planning on using it as a sort of effects compressor to get some nice tape saturated sounds out of it, e.g. a kick drum recorded to tape at a hot hot level.

And maybe I'm gonna try it as a "vintage" master recorder! Sound crazy? Well, I'm gonna post soundfiles when I get it!

good idea for me,i waitin since l lot of weeks after my akai ds4000 reel to reel to go the same way,the saler give it to repair for a minor problem of outputs and the guy is not ready to repair it...i think it can gives you flavor of analog sounding and some nice third harmonic distortion..

Cool! I wish I had a little more money for a reel-to-reel! The GX 4000 is nice! But believe me, there will be the day when a mint studer will hit my studio floor!

I knew a guy selling a mint studer 8 track for 800 bucks. it is absolutely a cool machine, but the reels costs like 70 bucks each.

Funny, a few weeks back I just couldn't resist to buy this here at the local thrift store. Paid 5 Euro



I got so many tapes from the 80s and 90s and just needed something to listen to them again.

But it also give some interesting saturation/distortion fx

Here are two some examples:

First example
First 2 bars = vinyl to DAW
next 2 bars = vinyl to tape (rec gain "normal") to DAW
next 2 bars = vinyl to tape with a bit more rec gain
and so on


the order of the second example (drums) is just as the first one (always a bit more rec gain)
as you can hear the last few bars are really distorted and may sound unusable but I cut out a snare and a kick of the different saturation stages and pasted them behind each other to show the difference and that it is still usable.

years ago a sucker stole all the tapes from my car while i was at a concert
he stole almost ALL my cassettes but still have some others
i got a technics cassette deck but sometimes it "munchs" the tapes so i dont' listen that stuff frequently. last year i made some recordings with the sp1200 and the microkorg but i'm afraid to ruin the tapes so... i have to find another deck

800 bucks is still 800 bucks! The tape deck kost me 30 € which is like 35? bucks. Anyway I would take a 2-track version. Reels must be a bit less expensive then?!

Thanks for your examples! The saturation effect really sound lovely. I'm really exited now for my deck to arrive. There will be loads of experimentation going on. As I said: Once I got something to show you I'll post it here!

Ahhh, and I have some old tapes with DJ mixes that I can digitalise! Lovely!

Haha i am in the same boat, i am about to grab a Tascam 122 MKII exclusivley for recording my mixes to

i used to use reel to reel for several years, but i dont want the maintance + this large (tho beautiful) mashines in my lil studio
i really like to keep everything minimalistic, so that tascam goes in the rack.

i ve read madvillan was mixed into a Tascam 4 trk... well whats good enough for that sound is good enough for mine.

i ve also decided to say good by to the whole gear/Highend madness and will keep everyhting minimal and oldschool now.

i was about to jump over the fence to get a Thermionic Fat Bustard.... but man i am getting a 100,- euro oldschool Space Echo rotary knob mixer instead + the Tascam

nothing wrong with this stuff SCREW freakin Pro Tools and everyone who thinks hes pro using it





hmmm the more i think about the minimalisic non Highend aspect i think i can analyze it even (for me)
i think having a stack of expesnive Highend Gear and impressive things like a big Studer Reel in a HOME!! studio is putting some kind of pressure on the artists (or just me) setting switches in the mind that you have to justifiy having such gear, stressing... pressure...
not a good base (for me) to make good music

and a 300,- bucks racked Yamaha Pm1000 Pre workes miles better for me than an Averill 1272 Highend Pre

Ion you're right! I kinda have this feeling of pressure too. I'm thinking of getting a compressor soon and somehow I think I should save a bit money and get like a distressor or chandler limited or whatever in that price range! But hey, I'm not a pro and those FMR audio really nice blah blah units should just work for me.

People should always consider that the emphasis in "sound quality" should be on sound. I mean everyone can play absolute crap music and record it through an SSL desk into Pro Tools and mix it like a pro. Sound quality will be good, but the music? Listen to Madlib: No audiophile will enjoy his beats sound quality wise, but the music itself is fire!!!

no seriously... i hate 80s reverb drums and love the crisp and body of 70s dead space drums / raw beats like the mad liberator.
i consider this a form of audiophile aswell. heh

i heard the RNC you are talking about is good in parallel on drums... why not, try it.

i only kept gear that i really HEAR and like... that is for example an ADR Compex Compressor wich kills on Drums and 2 Pm1000`s... well and a Culture Vulture wich you may consider Highend... but than again its Lofi

i didnt have a chandler, or the distressor, but the Fatso.... but honestly... again, while it was kinda nice and had some HF rounding, it really wasnt worth that cash to me and besides the rounding EQ like thing i found it rather boring.

yes and i just recently read an madlib interview (but must be several years old) and i didnt know he produces almost without any gear of that kind... that really gave me the last impulse to stop wasting my time running after the magic subtle differences in gear or that magic highend or vintage piece ect ect

on the other hand, i wouldnt have come to those boxes that i found,liked and kept without all that experimentation

next step is cassette tape and i am getting a spring reverb back
