oh btw the Compex is beig remade these days and called RADIOMAN sells from germany on ebay... one just went

i dunno how tehy compare but you get them for around 400,- eur

and teh Compex is a HEAR piece!

yes, a spring reverb is nice. I once had an organ (philichorda) with a spring reverb and it also had an audio in to use it for external input. Really nice. And it was cheap. I payed 20 DM back then (about 10 Euro)

I love reading stuff like that. What's great is you listen to Third and you think it was completely done on tape. Geoff Barrow is a character. On his blogs on Portishead's myspace while they were making the record he was always taking digs at everyone. His beef with Ronson was funny shit.

Just gotta say, props to PETERPIPER for that comparison!

I've got a giant tascam 246 tape 4 track hats pretty cool, but don't really use it as its in a terrible state, and i get stressed out every time i try and do anything with it. I'm also thinking of gettin an akai 4000d off the bay for some analog saturation.

Anyone with a reel to reel willing to do an A/B comparison like peterpipers? I always read Premier and Pete Rock talking about the sound of 1/4 tape, but i'd love to actually hear the difference it makes to some drums with different gain levels.

+1 Loved my old jvc dually boombox. Made tons of pause tapes on that. Still had it up until about 2yrs ago when the motor quit working. :( My dad has it now, but it's still not working. It get's power, but the tapes won't move.

i got a technics cassette deck but sometimes it "munchs" the tapes so i dont' listen that stuff frequently. last year i made some recordings with the sp1200 and the microkorg but i'm afraid to ruin the tapes so... i have to find another deck

Amen right there. I've always read about how back in the day the people would get "good" distortion by driving stuff into the red. I never really thought about using it as an effect though unless you were recording directly to it as a master. I did always love tapes. Shitt was way more reliable than CD's. I had a few tapes that just lasted forever, and I played those bad boys. Left them all in cars I got rid of. Anyways...
