man thers so many different methods to digging/sampling/making beats/sexing/balling/cooking/dancing/etc. my point being everyone has there own way of doing everything. i think the ease comes with practice.

im not gna lie bro, i was getting frustrated aswell, thinking surely the way kayne/dre/alc/dilla/madlib bang out beats non-stop there must be a hidden method to digging/sampling but then i saw a video with alchemist and he said he will spend aaaaaages going through records just to find the perfect sound, so that made me feel a lil more confident to know that professionals face the same problems as i. if it was a case of u didnt have to listen to stacks of vinyl to find ure sound i honestly think making music would be boring.....

sumthing i like to do though and im sure many people do aswell, is if i hear a nice sample on say a jdilla track, ill find out who the sampled artist is and then ill check their catalogue and then find out what other artists fit in with that genre.....i see it as slightly cheating but it just opens you up to so much music, like thers many jazz/soul/rock/arabic/etc artists that i would have never heard of had i not checked who so-and-so sampled. dont look for the easy route man, just enjoy the ride

yo, im curious to everyone's phillosophy in regard to a situation wich has happened to me on more than one occasion whilest diggin/sampling - but it really urked me the other day:

the situation:
1.i find a nice ass sample.
2.i sample it, chop it, oblivious to whether or not someone else already sampled it.
3.find out its already been sampled, and, the way i flipped it is very similar to the way someone else already did it so even tho i flipped it, its too close for comfort.(no, it wasnt a loop).

i mean, what do you guys do when you find a sample someone already has taken (before or after you realize it)? i alredy sort of know my answer, but im just curious as to others approaches cause sometimes i feel like alot of the stuff i find has already been found , which i guess can be good cause i know im picking good stuff - but its also bad cause even if i chop the hell out of it i feel like im sort of biting (even tho i aint trying to) know what im saying?

do you skip the sample cause its been done?
do you flip it your own way seeing it as a challenge?
or does it depend on the sample/record and how choppable it is?
or do i go about my buisness and do me no matter what and if it happens to sound like so and so who cares?

I dunno, i mean sometimes i feel like you can be "choptastik" (chopping shit just to chop it cause its already been chopped and it aint doing the sample justice........)

I always take the approach "flip it my own way" but its always frustrating when you find that someone else has used the sample cause even if you flip it your own way, some people might think you are biting. maybe im just venting.

damn alchemist, finding every damn ill sample.

reampcc wrote:Alright I've been making music for about 2 years now. And I love sampling. But my problem is I just pick whatever sample I come across. That can be a good thing or a bad thing.....So what Im trying to do is start from scratch. So my question is this (1)How do you know what to sample? (Meaning how do you know what sample/record/song to look for) I know it might sound like a simple question but if you don't know what your looking for then how do you know what to sample? I think once I know the answer it will make my sample digging alot easier. Any suggestions would be great thanks.

man in my city the main place to buy vinyl is a store called plan 9 that has a basement or vinyl dungeon

i look for artwork that looks interesting, as well as i look at the vinyl and kinda see if it looks like it has been played many times, like did the other owner enjoy it alot and play it alot, (must be a reason)

hard to narrow it down but that is some ways i go about it

Man I do me. I dont care if Alc flipped it 20 minutes before me  . If I hear it, and I got an idea its on. If beat makers are so concerned with being original then sampling isnt a good choice to begin with.

i agree with poundaproblem

a sampling producer can't lay claim to a sampled record, it's like a deejay saying other deejays can't mix the same songs bullishhhhh

All this talk of "be original" bash new artists etc etc but then the same people want to pretty much make 90's premo, pete roc dilla, rza beats

last producer that i heard make something really "different" was timbaland in 96 with ginuwine's " pony"

when neptunes & nore dropped "superthug" that beat had me like wtf hit the deck

i'm not concerned about "original" i want def squad "el nino" beats in my deck

Somebody told me about that spot and I'll be headed down there soon .

To the og post , when I first started I was buying up everything regardless of the year or who was on it. After a while I wound up with a huge " later " pile . You get more focused the more you dig and then you will still get some " see you later " records but not that many. Put the time in , put the time in , put the time in .

reampcc wrote:Alright....I see what you guys are saying. I just thought there was an easier way to digg. Like I said I've been doing this for only 2 years so Im sorry. Im not fully educated on the art of sampling. I just sample whatever I hear or if someone uploads it. I just wondered what made producers go about finding or sampling a certain records. Mainly how do you know what records to sample....But it's all good. 'Preciate the responses. Peace.

you will feel it when you hear it. the best beats i make, are when i find a dope sample that i stumble across. when its got the right vibe or mood to it i use it. when this happens i usually complete a beat in a couple hours. if i just use whatever and try to piece it together it could take a week. so i understand what this guy means buy just using whatever. i basically look at that as improvising with what you got. on the otherhand it is better to just wait untill you find that dope sample that you immediatly know will be used. then it just flows together. knowing how to properly filter and position the sounds in your mix can greatly improve any attempt at sampling. somtimes thats all it takes to make a sample sound dope.
