okay so after having this for a few days, i'm still lost. i can't navigate my way around anything, and i have no idea how it works,
does anyone have anything to share about how they learned it?
i don't want to sound like i'm giving up in any way, i am going to learn this thing lol i just feel like i'm doing it the wrong way because after hours of fiddling with it i still don't know anything
before you say "READ THE MANUAL", i have been, sort of... (i have it on my computer, the guy forgot to ship it out) its been hard to be bent over a computer screen looking through it, so ive been using it for specific things... but anyway i feel like im rambling , maybe this is a dumb question but based on your experience is there any way to learn this that i s more productive, i guess my question is where should i start?

Well, what is it you wanna do with it? If you got a o.s. sytem disk with it, load that first of course. Second, you'll have to decide if you want to sample or load a sound library.

Read the manual, learn the functions, push buttons you read about and see where it takes you all the while making a practice beat so you can get used to the functions, your being impatient and it's working against you BIGTIME.

no 1 go print out the manual and sleep with it under your pillow.no 2 understanding it will maybe take you some years to fully intergrate this complex new system.no 3 its well worth the patience.

Good spot Lamp. I will say that in an otherwise excellent manual - they could have made this particular part a bit clearer. Yes the info is there but maybe they could be a bit more obvious in presenting this. It is a crucial bit of the workflow and I had to hunt for this several times.

Drunk, I've had a couple of ASR-10s for about 6 months now and this is how I got confident enough on the unit.
Take the advice and do with it what you will. I think whatever advice is given is going to be secondary to the approach you will have. :wink:

Right - its not all bad. Here's what worked for me

i) Read the Manual - you don't have to be at the unit to do it, and it may not be the most exciting bedtime reading - but an initial read of the unit wouldnt hurt.
ii) If you don't have spare cash - check out You Tube. Add them to your favourites. Look at what they're doing.
iii) This REALLY worked for me - just get a large A4 notebook - and on each page - write down the key presses to do certain things - start with the stuff you know you'll need, Lampdog's post is literally word for word what's in the first page of my notebook. You'll be surprising how this helps you focus on what you need to know.
iv) It will take time to get into the correct frame of mind - but start using the unit. I think the buzzing is the cabling as I've had exactly the same issues. You don't have to go straight into a 10 hour recording session - just try a beat here - a couple of samples there.

Apply this in the right frame of mind - and it will work for you. You're hitting all the angles (theory and practical) but just be aware that it takes time.

thanks, very helpful. i'll try all of that

do you think i should get the guy to send the manual? i hate reading manuals on my computer because after a while it gets annoying to be looking at the screen... he said he'd include it, and it was in the picture, then he said his wife forgot to ship it and he emailed me the pdf... but... i dont really want that... i'll email him right now

Glad to help.

Like you - I cannot stand reading manuals on screen. If the seller said it was included in the price then hassle him to send it. The additional postage paid is frankly his problem.

A couple of additional tips

i) Invest in a copy of Sample Magic if you can - its an excellent book
ii) Make a note of the links offered at the start of this thread and follow up on them.

Take that pdf to a printing shop and have it printed out if you want the hardcopy, staples and office depot will do it.

i say +1 watch some YT tutorials... you get the picture pretty quick how to sample and chop etc... just raw... than searh THIS thread for the detailed instructions how to chop.. its on ONE page quoted by Dukenewport somewhere in the middle

everyting else (not going in too deep) is quite obvious!

the Command Button is your friend for loading/saving/delting ANY kind of file
and eh EDIT... well... the name says it

if you have a specific issue how about a specific question?

fo rsampling press sample button right corner, choose L or R in , pick one of the 8 Instrument tracks and ready to go... after that apply the chopping tutorial by copying the Wavesample several times and make a chop out of each

its really not at all hard to learn!

ok, heres a specific question.. or two


when i have some samples, how do i lay them out so they aren't pitched up and down the keyboard? should i just do the keyboard range thing?


do i have to have the OS disk in every time i turn it on? or is there a way to load it into the machine or some shit



thats all i have for now. but the more i start working with this, the more questions i'll have... i'll make sure i check the thread and manual first though, thanks in advance

alright since my asrs on in front of me right now edit>layer>pitch tble= no pitch


and no you have to have it unless you have scsi which you can put it in a zip but no no just flashing it in there

i was wondering about saving global parameters
ive recently started trackin my beats in using midi and controlling vsts man is it lovely
but when i assign each track to send a different midi channel track 1-8 on channels 1-8
so i set it all up and save global parameters. but when i load up the asr they al set back to channel 1 i was wondering is this not a saveable parameter(which im figuring it is but was worth the question)
in the manual it says it saves all edit/system parameters
but its not happening how i think it would

A good question - I've got the same issue sending out data to my Turbo Phatt. At the moment I need to load in 8 MIDI instruments as well.

No big deal - but Im running 3.5.3 and haven't been able to save the setup. Thinking about it maybe saving an Instrument Bank would work - but I don't think the instruments can be loaded in as 'default' i.e. as soon as the box is switched on.
