Sequencing Techniques

i just realized i have auto step increment! I never knew!

Yee-haaa there goes all my troubles.

I haven't started tracking my beats yet...I'm busy buying a sound card and controller for cubase SL.

Do you guys find that your beats come to life when you're arranging around the vocals? Like at the moment i'm happy with my beats, just feel like they need more break downs build ups, stop-starts and fills. But when you do that stuff without the vocal track it sounds a little whack like "what happened there?" why did the beat stop and then start again.....

Do you guys find that you start building on to your beats, and adding some extra stuff once you hit the vocal tracking phase?

i just build a sequence then mute tracks and copy next sequence and turn off or turn on different tracks,

some of you guys don't use the song mode, i can't belive that, i use it excusively how do you listen to what you make then .

i got a question how dose that work the guy who started this thread said his friend makes one sequence with a kik and a second sequence with a snare, and then plays it in song mode mode, are his sequences really short, i can't figure that one out because in sone mode it would play and take it a while to get to the next sound, right? unless you shorten your bars. can some one explain this .

can you record track mutes? like if i made my 4 bar loop 64 measures, then overdubbed track mute?

i think you can in mixer mode it's called automate your mpc

step 1. shift+mixer

step 2. go toset up mixer screen

step 3. turn record mixer changes to yes


now play in /record your sounds on the mixer screen ,not the main screen

im gonna try it....so far i just freestyle all my recordings, but maybe i can automate them, then do several takes, and then be able to midi sync and track.....man im lazy.

Say you start with you kick pattern on trk 1, snare pattern on trk2, bass on 3, rides on 4, loops on 5 and 6

each seq is 1 or 2 bars long

well copy that seq (make seq 2) and add another loop on track 7 change the bass on trk 3

copy that seq (make seq 3) and add another loop on track 8 etc

build your track one sequence at a time. Then go to song mode and tell each sequence how many times to play...

say seq 1 is 1 bar, well you have it repeat 8 times

say seq 2 is 2 bars, have it repeat 4 times

seq 3 is 4 bars, repeat 2 times

seq 5 is 1 bar so repeat 8 times

your up to the break down at 33 - enter seq 5 (2 bars) with you kicks stripped and some crazy effect, have it repeat 4 times...

my buddy can freak this though - he's got like jedi powers to see half way through the song

go into STEP mode and hit OPEN WINDOW. There is an option to turn AUTO STEP INCREMENT on. Then it will advance to the next step (set in quantize) when you play a pad.

(im glad i keep reading the manual over and over cause i find stuff like this hidden in some wierd spot that i didnt notice the first few times)

thanks for clearing that up .i just didnt understand correctly but this is how i do it, i thought you were sayin just one sound per sequence.

what i do is put all my sounds on sequence 1 the shut off track as i copy,then you can raise or lower your bars as you go.

That's one way to go about it - write all your tracks in 1 sequence say like 20 tracks then copy that sequence 15 times and mute and unmute to your hearts content to write your song

I have to be honest - all this is way easier for me in Ableton Live - the session view works just like MPC sequencing and you can trigger the clips in Ableton with the MPC pads so...I've had an MPC for the past 5 years minus one in the middle so I know how they work, doesn't mean it's my main sequencer

Can someone explain to me what Auto Step increment IS?
