Love that feeling..

.. when you discover an already used sample, but don't realise it after you've chopped it up and flipped it.

A few weeks back I posted a loooong @ss post about shopping vinyl. Well on that stack was an old funk record that I had listened through briefly when I had copped it, but nothing caught my ear then.

A while after that I listened through it properly and found a couple of open bassdrum-snare-hihat combinations, but they were really short so you couldn't really loop them.
I sampled them, chopped 'em up and recorded a few seqs with a couple of different versions. Suddenly I noticed that one of those sounded familiar.. I listened to it and then it hit me! BAM!!!

It was the exact same drum pattern as in A Tribe Called Quest's "What?" It took me a while to hear the resemblance because I always eq everything before sampling, and I had eq'd it to sound more bass heavy than on the Tribe album...

Still, feels great! I ended up using a slightly different version so it won't sound too familiar.

yeah i've done that before, i think your just to bussy searching you dont realize what you just past up. thats what DIIGIN IS ALL ABOUT my friend .

thats way i do it for that feeling it's like opening up amillion brand new records when it's only just one old record.

its pretty good unless you are liek usign it then like after three or four times playign it your liek oh man familar then you get your hommies to come in and be liek whats this piano or whatever line from.....then ohhhhh snapppppppp thats that new joint blah blah blah.

i did the same sh*t wit the "We are the champions" song. Did it, made the whole beat then downloaded this kanye west song and it was basically the same fuuckin thing. Bullshit, mine was actually better.

I don't think just cause a sample has been used that you still can't flip it I just mainly look at who used the sample and if it came out as a single and was it something that there was a video for.If it hit the radio as a single and if it could be heard on Rap City throwback thursadays then I won;t even bother using it.

My best story of the same situation is when I made a beat of an old Mamas and Papas record... This sweet bassline... I chopped it up and re-arranged it and it was slammin...

I had never heard KMD's Black Bast*rd at the point that I had made the beat... My brother and I went to the used CD store around here and I copped it cause I'm a huge MF fan...

My brother's listening to it and goes, "Yo someone used this sample... Come here you got a good ear for this sh*t... Who used it?"

I listen and I'm like, "O I used that"... We were sh*ttin ourselves... I mean basically I used it way before I knew KMD had, but sequentially they grabbed it first... Kinda funny...

I haven't used it since then... My beat was different from KMD's cause they just looped it and I chopped it, but still it was too similar so I didn't even use it...

i dont think it really matter if sombody used a sample, it depends how U flip it

Maybe one day not even too far away every single break and bassline that is somehow usable will have been sampled and there will be nothing left.
The supplies are limited, and even the most obscure jazz and funk and disco records often have been reissued in the last years, and used by many. Maybe there is still some stuff from the eighties, and then there are all the nineties records, which are too young now, but in 5 years...
