BOUGHT A USED MPC 4000... HELP!

I JUST BOUGHT A WHITE MPC 4000 FOR 400 CASH! THE OWNER NEVER GOT TO USE IT. LOOKS BRAND NEW.. NOT A SCRATCH. BUT WHEN HE LOADED THE SOUND BANK ON THE CD. HE SAID HE DID SOME WRONG COMMAND AND CRASHED THE SYSTEM. WHEN I BOUGHT IT , IT WAS FROZEN WITH JUST A PICTURE THE METRONOME THING ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. I TRIED LOADING 1.71 ON THE OS AND IT JUST FREEZES AFTER THE MPC4000 LOADING PAGE. ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO FIX/ WITCH OS TO LOAD???

What method did you use when you tried loading the os? Was it via cd or uploaded via the pc os loader?

i did it os loader. i think i need to put the old os back on but it wont recognize the usb

Here's what it says in the service manual...

The OS update can be made from the PC via the USB port.
You must have the “OS loader software for MPC4000” besides the OS .bin file.
The OS loader software includes the OS Loader.exe file, USB driver.inf file, and USB Driver.sys file.
1. Install USB Driver to your PC
After all files are un-Zipped, place the USB Driver.inf and USB Driver.sys files into the same folder, e.g. Driver.
Boot up the PC and MPC4000 complete and then connect the sampler to the PC using the USB cable.
This prompts that the PC found the new device an d the new driver is required.
Refer it to the Driver folder you just created.
The Driver software will be placed correctly and the MPC4000 is recognized properly.
2. OS update
Double click on the OS Loader.exe icon and specify the OS .bin file. It will send the OS to the MPC4000.
[Caution]
After the update, be sure to initialize the MPC4000 by pressing the GLOBAL key, and then [F6] (INITIAL)
and [F5] (DO IT) keys, before turning it off.
[OS update procedure from CD-R]
To update the OS from the CD-ROM, it requires the OS version later than V1.02 software installed on the MPC4000.
You can update the OS from the CD-ROM drive. Be sure to use the CD-ROM that contains the OS for the MPC
4000. You can create the OS disc by using your PC’s CD-R/W function to write the “MPC4000.bin” file on to an
ISO9660 CD-ROM disc.
1. Turn the MPC4000 on and insert the OS disc.
2. Press the LOAD key and select the MPC4000 OS file (.bin file).
3. Press the [F6] (DO IT) key and then the [F6] (INSTALL) key.
4. The OS Update progress appears, i.e. the messages “Please wait ??.” and then “Upgrading of the Flash
ROM was successful.” appear accordingly.
5. Press the [F6] (Restart) key. Be sure to initialize the MPC4000 by pressing the GLOBAL key, and then the
[F6] (INITIAL) and [F5] (DO IT) keys, before turning it off.

Is this how you did your 4k? Notice I highlighted what's considered an important step in this procedure.

i didnt do the final step. the global , f5, f6 keys. i just get a white screen now. usb dosnt recognize and cd rom dosnt open. so i have no way to load it again.

^^^ Yikes! I can imagine what you feel like. Well, try this and see if it will work...

I noticed that if you do decide to take this on, ground yourself first. Once you open the case you want to look for a board that resembles a "L" shape so to speak.

It's called the PC IO BLK, and if you're looking at it from the correct side you can find the "PROG" short pins. It's three contacts with the word "PROG" showing only two of the three pins to short out.

As I just posted in another thread. Sounds like a compatibility issue with the Hard Drive. Disconnect the drive and try turning it on.

This is just to help clarify what I was referring to. Hopefully you won't have to go this far with getting it repaired. But if and when you do, the principle components and their locations are laid out here for ya.

*Notice the PC IO BLK is the lower of the two boards directly in the center of the chasis*

Please folks, don't go by this procedure if your 4k is already in working order. Doing so will cause your unit to go into "ROM FAILURE". If by chance it's already in non working condition (such as a rom failure, won't boot up, blank screen) and all other resources have failed, then I'd say go ahead and proceed, but with caution though.

How do I know this? I tried it myself, and sho nuff that mufucca went into what I just discribed. But I didn't panic, 'cause I had the restoring resources at my disposal (4k os loader and 1.71 bin file).

Gots to be more careful.

i tried this. nothing happened. just stayed blank screen.

Lil Ray, have you tried any of what I suggested? If it's not you that'll be doing this, do you know anybody that's capable of following the previously mentioned steps for shorting out the two pins?

Hi buddy. I remember my situation and nobody could help me with my problem. I had to find work around for this and it worked fine. But when I look to what U wrote I must say whole situation stinks. I can't imagine crushing my MPC just by typing wrong command. Maybe I don't know something but my MPC does everything I want it to do and I've tried nearly everything on it. It is more likely to pop up with some bug than crush completely.
I also had many FATAL ERRORs but that was my problem and I had t oovercome it. Fatal error was FATAL and I had to reset my MPC but I found it to be abuse and I wanted to find work around as quick as I can, so I did it.

so i shorted out the pins on the L shaped board in the middle. and the ones on the upper right hand side ( top board) nothing yet. but when i disconnect the harness from the l shaped board to the board under the steel plate, the hard drive and cd rom turn on but dont recognize the pc loader.
