Pete Rock Bass?

How does Pete Rock get his bass notes. Are they from a synth or something, or did he get a real bass player to record each note so he could sequence them later. With my current bass programs, I can get the bass tune to be how I like it, but never the same sonic quality as Pete Rock(and 9th Wonder and Kev Brown for that matter). Is it all in the original bass sounds I use (if so where do I get them?) or can compression save me? (I've tried factory presets on my software compression but it is nothing astounding).

it is called the low end threoy. what u do is to take a filter, a low pass, which the 2kxl has allready and take any sample or say some drums with a bassline and fiter out the high end so u are left which just bass. then u boost the signal and lay it under cuts.

Pete's got one, a rare one, and yes it is nice. That's how he gets his bass.

On this Low end theory stuff, is filtering what ATCQ was refering too, and if so is there any links to prove it? It seems a weird way to refer to low pass filtering.

pete rock started the low end threoy ish. its in that waxpoetics interview. And he talks about it as how he gets his bass. U can here him do it to rhodes alot but he also uses other samples to filter out and make bass outta it.

Yeah! We were playing around one day at Eddie F's house, making beats, and I touched this button on the Akai 950 or 900. I was just pressing buttons, seeing what they did. The loop was playing and I was just messing with the knob. The next thing you know it starts changing... I turned it back, turned it back again, and thought to myself this is an instant bass line! Even when somebody's singing! If the bass line's dope, just EQ it and muffle everything else. I just ran with it. Nobody was doing it at the time, not even Marley Marl. That was in '89 or '90.

I know, he talks about how he discovered it. It isn't his only trick, the rhodes is a staple.

A Fender Rhodes is one of the greatest (in my opnion, THE greatest) electric piano ever made.
