Is this a common problem?

Yes its a common problem with old gear. First of all you need to look what is broken. Is it the plastic button or the tact switch itself.
If its the plastic thing you'll need to order it at mpc-stuff.com or some similar store.

If its the tact switch you can do two things.

1. buy some isopropyl, use a drip of the isopropyl on the tact switch (you can use a qtip for this), press the switch a few times, let it dry a few minutes and use your MPC again untill it wont work again (maybe in a few weeks or months :))

2. desolder the tact switches and buy some new ones at your local electronic store. Solder them in and have fun again.

For someone who has some experience with electronics and soldering this is not very difficult. If you dont have experience then send it to a repair service.

peace
