backing up and upgrading HD 2500

i got a 40 gig hd with a couple gig left on it, time to back up.. i've done it before about three years ago via usb1 when i got JJ and lost a fair bit of work besides it took a day blah blah..

it would be ideal to upgrade to a larger hd at the same time.

how should i go about backing up? pull out the hd and take it somewhere..

note: i just got a 1tb portable for my mbp, a bit bigger than an ipod. dope!

to be clear i want to upgrade my old 40gb with a 120+gb drive, but still keep all my data, around 36gb.

what would be the most efficient way of doing this?

dont know to much about this yet, as I have not done it myself. But normally it would be to mount the harddisk on your computer, and then transfer the files over to your harddisk of choice. Or to buy one of these cases where you can put in a harddisk and use it like an external. and do it the other way.

do it outside of the machine. The USB1 is godawful in regards to speed. You can get a simple case for the HD and use the computer to do all the transfer work.


OR

Do what I do and backup more frequently this way its only 5 minutes clips of your time.

ok thanks, yeh usb1 is just a ridiculous path to roll down.

what are these cases to use an internal like an external, they work on mac? a link would help.

i made a few calls to computer places, and i can get a ide/sata usb2 adapter locally for AU$49, so ima roll with that. usb2 is a godsend over usb1.. if they ever make a usb upgrade for these mps, i'd be all over that!

btw what type of hard drive is in the 2500's, 2.5 inch ide or sata?
mine was pre installed..
