Drum sound modules ?

At the moment Im mainly sampling drum loops and chopping then up in what ever feels right within that loop.

Which is cool cus i can re sample and make a load of new samples out of it.

But i would also like to find out more information about midi drum modules the history and whats hot in the hip hop

world. I want to produce my own beats using both midi drum module sounds and samples.

There must be decent modules available with various parameters and rhythm patterns which are programmable.

I know i could google search on the issue but wanted to find out more from other mpc users.

Ive just been checking out midi drum modules and hit up on the AKAI XR20 beat production station.

Ive already got an mpc 2500 so hooking the XR20 up to it would give me more freedom to get creative ?

Its got 700 samples, 90 prest patterns and you can trigger different patterns on the fly using the pads...

The questions im asking myself is it worth the money ? When there are so many other modules on the market.

But on the other hand im thinking i could get some hot sounds and patterns working.

U can record/create any sound u want to giving u limitless creativity.

I know some people who are satisfied with the XR20
Depends on what kind of music ur producing and what kind of sounds ur looking for.

But IMO buying a drum module when u have mpc is a waste of money.

(BTW, there was somebody here on this forum who had uploaded all the XR20 samples in mpc format)

Alright Menco, I get your point about being a waste of money as i already have an mpc, i was just thinkin of the kits

that are already recorded on the xr20. and resampling them. Its a large amount of money for just using the samples.

Plus i was thinking of the what i could produce by hooking them to up via midi.

Im still debating on whether to go for it or not !

Sometimes its nice to be able to easily tweak a sound to fit the pattern just right. its easier to tweak sounds on a dedicated sound module many times, especially something with lots of knobs. . Look for some dedicated drum / percussion modules, I tend to go for more obscure older piees than the XR20 though.

If I was to get anything of the sort it would be a Handsonic or some type of drum pad I could use drum sticks with. Other than that, I'd assume those drum modules wouldnt have much more/better drums than whats on a typical midi module. At least with somethin like a Handsonic/drum pad you could have a different way of playin that may effect yo sound. But I agree, to buy a drum machine when you HAVE a drum machine is a bit ummm...

sometimes you sample a drum modulesynthesyser and it loses its freshness!!!!also its good to reach outside the one box flavour.emu mpphat is popular also i use ensoniQ mr with urban expansion.interesting variety.but i feel like encouraging peeps to record bsample their own beats and percussion.layering differnt souns.i think where all on the lookout for some new snares.cheers

as others have said, no point getting a sample-based drum machine/module. given you've got a sampler.
i'd suggest an analogue machine with good/distinctive swing.
i use a roland cr-8000. it's the precursor to the 808. it's analogue and has a great swing to it.
you seem to be able to pick them up for OK prices, unlike 808s, 606s, 909s.

it doesn't have midi, but that's not a problem. set the tempo as close as you can to your mpc, sample then adjust with the tuning function to get it perfect.

i use it for the great hi-hat and conga patterns. it complements the mpc well.

The only (non-classic) hardware drum machine I would consider is the Elektron Machinedrum. That's the drum machine to end all drum machines...

The Roland Handsonic (and most everything else) is based off samples, and the Korg Wavedrum costs more than some small cars...

If you have a computer, you could check out some plugins like AraldFX DKS Pro and the new one from Image Line called Drumaxx (and Drumaxx is dirt cheap right now with pay-what-you-want (minimum $13)). Those are perfect if you wanna design your own drum sounds, then resample them and load them into your MPC...

i said NEW korg hand drum !!!abouts $500.its off the hook...full contact...plus when you sample the modules ect ya loose the feel of the original.mpc s have there own sound.feel.plus you get the alternative mixing channels..i would try to go for one of the older early 90 s modules as they have some mystique about them and go for peanuts.roland romplers for instance seem to have odd personalitys..
