If you have both switches down on the zip drive, have the cable connected to the left connector (looking at the back of the zip drive), have selected SCSI-5 on your MPC and have a zip disk inserted into the drive, it should work. If the MPC still says "SCSI not ready", then I'd guess the zip drive has a problem.

Something I noticed when I used a zip drive, was that whenever my zipdrive would go into "powersave mode" I would have to eject the zip disc, then insert it again, wait till the spinning slows down and then push load. Worked a charm every time!
