What are some basic techniques to create basslines?

i feel limited just sampling loops. what else can i do to create a more personalized bass sound?

1.you can find a dude who can play bass, mic him up, sample into your computer, and load em into the MPC.

2.on the MP, you can just load samples, play with the settings, attack, decay, velocity, use the note variation slider to achieve a more naturual sound, set the bass pad to mono for greater control, mix up different notes of the same bass sound, etc...

just some quick ideas that i have used in the past. have fun.

This is a good question. I'm also curious.

I have an Alesis Nanobass, but regardless, i'm curious as to what are some other, more convetional, unique, methods of acquiring basslines.

I'm a visual artist who uses sound, so I am no expert. But in my research over the years, I have found that lots of folk build basslines from their kick drum patterns. There a few articles on this online. I just can't think of any titles. But search around. And you can actually copy your kick pattern and then replace it with a bass sound. Then tune each strike where you like it. Add or subtract a few more and you have a bassline. Of course, real musicians will give better details, but this is a start.

try taking drum loops and then FILTERING (dialing the jog dial to lower the freq. number ) until you only hear the LOW end resonating)

or sample PURE BASS as in SYNEWAVES... this is the purest form of bass
the 2000 and 2xl have sufficient filters to get dope ass bass from almost any drum loop

Yeah, i just did this for the first time last night. (i usually just use a module, but i wanted to give this a shot) I sampled a 1 bar drum loop, assigned my NV slider to it, and just shifted the filter around til i got the right sound. It ended up being just slightly above the lowest setting. And i'll tell you what, i got myself a MEAN-a*s baslsine!

sample the same loop twice
now filter down one as mentioned above till you only hear the low end
now track them side by side and your bassline plays exact same as loop

"sample the same loop twice"-- in other words, assign the same sample to two different pads.

in other words, dont waste memory space by samplining it twice, just assign it to 2 different pads with different settings.

Or just sample 1, good, clean bar. Assign it to one pad (filter it way down of course), and use the BPM-match feature to match it to the rest of your sequence.

(For those who don't know (and i'm sure you all do) The BPM match is under the timestretch screen under the edit menu in the trim screen)

This is a good little trick,

in REC mode on MPC,
pull out the Master Out RCA cord on the mixer, and just touch the metal of the RCA outs on the mixer, (just pull out the cords until the tips are in a bit, just touching the metal) and you will get that nasty noise of unpluged equipment, But if you sample that and chop it up you can get some great bass sounds.
Very Loud and Very low bass sounds
Just mess around a bit and you can get different noises.
I have got some really wicked Bass sounds this way.

word. I like to grab a cello, violin or other string sample, then chop it up, assign it to pads, then filter the heck out of it till its low and dark, then play with the attack settings for the pad until it sounds more like someon plucking it (like a bass) then use that.

It dont always work, but when it does it sounds cool.

loop an 808 kick, freq to 0, resonance to about 3, set the decay to 5 or 6 to give it a little tail end (if it's looped, otherwise leave decay alone)
