Is the super producer dead?

Hey guys.. i was just looking at producers discography then and now... the neptunes, timbaland, and dr dre have all sold more beats, at a higher price, longer than most other producers.. However other new producers such as bangladesh, the bizness and danja all have the same things the forementioned group of producers had..
1. Countless radio hits. 2.Made good music 3. and are pretty phuckin talented (many ppl would arugue that bangladesh is talented lol) anyhow the last group of producers have less work, sale beats cheaper and you only hear from them every now and then.. in a nutshell i wanted to know what you guys thought about this.. in my opinion the super producer is dying out gettin killed by every kid who buys fl studio and calls himself a producer cuz he makes 1 hot beat. are we all screwed? can we not make as much money as timbo or the neptunes?

There are more oppertunities for more people to produce a song. Instead of a few people making a lot of money u now have a lot of people making some money.

What I really miss are those dedicated producer/dj and mc duo's and groups. A lot of mc's worked with one DJ like Guru, C.L. Smooth, Krs, Rakim.
Groups like A tribe called quest, Wu-Tang.
MC's have too many producers to choose from nowadays.

The current state of the usic biz is very similiar to the 1950's as far as being "singles" driven instead of full length album driven. back then, an a & r guy might get a band/artist to record two songs on a monday then get some vinyl singles pressed up and the record passed to the radio deejays on wednesday ( when the radio guys were allowed to play what they wanted/local tastes.


the radio spins would send the listeners to the store to buy the single then go to the shows



nowadays, artists record the songs theirself, upload to the net instead of records in the store

youtube in and bloggers in place of the radio jocks

only dedicated fans will buy physical cd's etc as they are for souvenir and collectibles, not so much as music container.


artists got to release material like every 4 to 6 weeks a new single to stay in people's minds(wayne did it with mixtapes... the songs are given away free online as promo items which can still be sold too but more so as a promotion tool to get the artist's popular to get gigs to make their money, as well as make the songs popular to seek tv/movie sync usage.. another $$ maker



taking the time to have a full length album done by a super producer could do the artist more harm than good as today is better to release single after single after single stay talked about (good or bad) the singles can be compiled on an album eventually as well

its saturated now. Everyone can get hacked software, torrents, downloaded sample packs etc and make beats. True that most of them suck but the value of a beat maker isnt what it used to be since there are so many. The internet has also made it easy for people to put their music out to people who they normally would have no means of communicating with. So the superproducer isnt dead but the need to pay him a ridiculous amount of money is. Because you can just find another.

FL. STUDIO and all the cookie cutter easy as 1 2 3 insert "producer name" sound kits online

has turned "beatmaking" into something like making those lego toys with the specific lego kits

apply that style to beatmaking.

10- 15 years ago was not that easy....


now that covers beatmaking but not PRODUCTION..


People are still skimping on production direction which is why myspace.com is flooded with good beats made into songs with poor production.

super PRODUCERS not super BEATMAKERS would not let the end product come out like that

I think it has more to do with "breaking new sound, artist, and or culture" ... Its all about innovation and bringing some new and "hip" to the table.

^ i would agree. however the neptunes and swizz beatz have sounded the exact same since they came out. you would think ppl would move on from buying tracks from them

i totally agree. However i think thats just politics. People dont want their beats, haha come on. They want the name and hype associated with it. So many random dudes out there making the same sounding club joints (interchangeable). Its all marketing and setting up an empire with a reputable name. Think about how many die hard hip hop fans out there all dying to put a face or a name on what they are so passionate about.

and on a side note i think the producers you named are probably good (i never heard of them personally), but it's probably a mistake to try and compare their net worth to producers like dr dre.

bg had a great point too, beat makers and producers are two totally different things!!

^ bg was correct in everything he said but the 2nd list of guys are all around producers as well.. if you dont kno bangladesh he did fireman by lil wayne, amilli by lil wayne, bossy by kelis and break up by mario.. danja actually is behind 99% of the shit you hear from timbaland from say it right by nelly furtado to sexyback by justin timberlake..

and its not like you can just download FL and suddenly be a superproducer. you still need talent.

what they are saying is that there was a time you actually had to buy equipment and gear and shyt... not download.. that makes every1 who wants to produce able to produce making it a more cluttered field

what that results in is a lack of commitment, half hearted dudes putting their very first beat making attempts online for "sale" which by flooding the market, it brings down the general value of beatmaking.

A higher investment to get into it, made the more lackluster guys just pass and do something else for fun instead

beat making has become a video game and people have been confusing making beats with "producing"
