Thats all well and good, Ricochet. But it's more than just about "who's the better musician"... i play keys and guitar, and still LOVE sample-based music. It's so much more than just method. There's a whole culture that goes along with digging for samples. Call it a sub-culture even, but it's undeniably there. Nothing is better than the feeling of digging through record after record, fingers all grimy, back hella hurtin.... about to give up, batteries dying on your HandyTrax... and then you find that PERFECT stab, or loop, or horn, or riff, or break, or whatever.... that feeling, honest to god, completes my essence. I, for one DO follow a code of ethics.... not necessarily with drums, but with loops... absolutely. I'm a hard core digger.... i only grab originals, no repressed fakes, unless they're imported with an alternate cover. I pretty much limit myself to anything pre-1975. Consider that limitation, but i call it a challenge. (Well, that and old pressings allow you to pan shit out! ha)..... but on the real. Digging is a HUGE part of my life. My dad did it, all my uncles did it and now i do it. I think it's ill when 3 or 4 cats can freak the same sample completely different. Sample-based music forces you to do a lot of workarounds... lots of innovation. And if you ask me, innovation is the key to forward progress in music.

Breakbeat Excavationist for life, ya heard me!

Hey man I aint knockin it I have done it too I have classic R&B tracks
Puffy would die for and more than likely knows nothing about
I have music thats out of print Im not knocking anything but how
can I call something my own if I TOOK IT then the Harry Fox Agency
is knocking on my door with a civil litigation lawsuit.

It doesnt matter how I take a sample and manipulate and mutilate it
and you have to be an expert in terms of dealing with samps in order
not to get caught so there are ways of using them if you can make
them unrecognizable other than that you're going to pay the author
some serious loot for using their samp if you are trying to push the
material or if you are just making the beat for fun and calling it a
remix than thats something else they may allow that but it's a rights
issue at that point and can you say you own the whole track I dont
think so not when someone else is laying claim to it.

They want to know the source of the material you used to make
your beat what will you say OH I TOOK A SAMP FROM COSMO D
JAM ON IT and A SAMP FROM MADDONA and A SAMP FROM
SUPERFLY

Get my point!

"And if you ask me, innovation is the key to forward progress in music".

Yes you are absolutely right being innovative in manipulating
someone elses material you high jacked to flip it a different
way that someone else did that ripped the same samp and
used it also to see who can flip the samp the best.

IF I DROPPED MY WALLET WOULD YOU RETURN IT?

Haha... that ish made me laugh.

Word, i absolutely see your point. Nuff said. I was just expressing my love for the hobby/lifestyle. And also making it known that there are musicians out there who also make sample based music.

All though, remember when being a "Producer" meant you could run the session top to bottom... (ala The Dude Quincy Jones, my hero) do a little studio drumming, a little recording, set up the mics, play a little bass, program some drums, etc? What happened to those days? Now, every kid with a cracked version FL is a "producer"

HELL NO!!! I WOULD GO BUY A RECORD OR TWO WITH THE SIX DOLLARS IN IT AND GIVE THE WALLET TO A BUM...

now im no fan of fl but some cats make straight fiyah with it and the rest are just dicc ridin no talent having wipper snappers... i have a motif rack and can crank a beat on that ish in 10 minutes that can flowers with whatever trash is on the radio cause all the sounds are on there, i just go crazy on the keys, does that make me better than someone using a casio?? i like that raw, east, nyc hip hop sound and samples play a major part in that so i stay diggin, i get more satisfaction of makin a sample based track than a keyboard one but thats just me, im a fan of the early 90s...

i think you all got good points...i just wanted to say.

i think it all depends on what makes you happy...i use to think i would never sample cause it was stealing, etc....but now im on the other end of the spectrum, as i learned more and educated myself...became part of the culture, and surrounded myself with records.

basically i feel there has to be certain standards that (at least) some of us a bide by because it holds the culture together.

i mean, i dont want hiphop to be known as a get rich quick genre by stealing other peoples shit(no matter what it is)....and thats what it pretty much is...(my efforts are to change that) now with that said, yeah, hiphop is based and originated off of sampling....but those same dudes that began that shit did not have the intention of thieving it the same way we percieve it today....ya know? its about respect for your tracks, and other artists. and thats why i dont wanna jack a dr.dre sample....cause my games gotta be better to put yours to shame.

peace

Word Archetype_J... Diggin is a culture that I love... When I first started I tried a lot of things... I did keyboard beats... They were absolutely no challenge... Not that I knock anyone who does that... I mean if you can lace a keyboard, that takes just as much skill and twisting a sample... I mean Scott Storch, Timbaland... Theres a lot of hot producers using keyboards...

I personally found no challange to do some basic keybaord beats... As soon as I got into diggin I fell in love... Theres a sense of pride and just a vibe you get when you're diggin... I especially loved that back hurtin comment... One of my diggin spots actually lets me use a chair from the back every now and then when I spend hours there...

This is all off topic, but I just wanted to express my love for the culture as well...

hip hop is like the child of every genre of music because we can sample sounds from any type of music and make it hiphop and thats whats makes it unique..this debate is like the digital vs analogue or what is or isnt underground-ITS NEVER GOING TO END..there is no bible for sampling ethics so we only have our opinions

did any of you guys read the samplin thesis someone posted on here?? cat interviewed alot of producers that dig and they pretty much broke the ethics down...not saying that you have to follow them and that their written in stone but true diggers understand, its in their dna :D

When you say the Neptunes just use presets are you implying that they aren't original???? When they came in the game name one hip-hop producer that they sounded like??? None!!! Not until everyone started biting their dicckhead. If that's not original then what is???? Diggin in crates like 5 million other people!!!!!!! :D You just can't make all these stupid rules in music it defeats the whole purpose it don't matter if you dig in crates or use keyboards either your hot or your not,

i dont think anybody said they werent original, the point was dont feel too special cause u can make a keyboard beat with sounds that are already there and hate on the diggers because they get their sounds off records...
