Hi,

I'm looking for a new cartridge for my TT. I thought about getting a Shure M44-7 because I tend to backcue records when I sample and thought a DJ style cart will allow me to do so without damaging the needle/records. But I understand that these DJ type carts aren't exactly good sounding. Should I go with a good non-DJ cart? Any way to back cue without a DJ stylus? How are you guys managing this?

thanks.

They also wear your wax out quicker, especially if you're doing stuff like backcueing.

You can always pick the needle up and move it back.

according to my research, dj carts wear out vinyl slower than hi-fi/ audiophile ones

Quick cueburn has to do with the stylus being Eliptical or Spherical and/or the amount of weight on the cartridge. I forget which type damages the record quicker. It always confused me. Basically the 44-7 is made for scratching and is widely used, so I doubt you backcueing a few times is going to destroy your record unless you tend to backcue 1000 times to sample the sound just right haha.
