Drum Hits

Hello. As the name states, I am new to mpcs, sampling, and production of any sort.

I have taught myself a lot through trial and error, but I still have a lot to learn.

My main dilema right now is, I'll hear a nice paino or synth, and want to turn it into a beat, but I don't have the framework. I don't have many drum hits in my library.

I have sampled a few kicks snares hats etc from a few of the records that I do have...they all sound gritty and what not, which is good--if I'm aiming to make that kinda beat.

I am looking for a place to download/online purchase drum hits though...GOOD ones...not these cheesy ones. I want the quality heavy bass hits and crisp snares, variety of hats.

I need to get that original foundation within my library...then if I hear a nice clap or something in a record, I can pull that.

Does anyone have any insight, or direction to point me in?

I heard some mixed opinions about the sample packages. I wouldn't really know since I sample all my drumsounds off vinyl records like most of the members here.

You're going to have to search, search, search, and create ,create ,create. I have a cold drum library, but I spend 8 years collecting sounds from everywhere. Buying, sampling, trading. Keep looking, keep working, your arsenal will grow just as your skills will.

You have all you need in front of you a computer and google! Search free drum kits or free samples, and you will be amazed at what pops up. You can tweak or stack sounds to create your own. Study musical production, it just takes work, and time. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was Pete Rocks production skills.

I just don't get it. I'd you don't want to take the
time to look for sounds why did you buy an MP? That makes no sense to me. Listening to all these records and discovering all this buried shit is the best part. If you just want to download sounds stick with the comp.

It's probably best to sample the drums from vinyl, true, but i understand where you're coming from. I make beats since a little more than a year, and am still building my own drum library... until it's a little more "filled up", i also like to use drumkits i've found on the net.

Because of it's roots it's quite common to sample of vinyl if u're doing hiphop. Especially beatmakers who are also dj's have enough sample material. But don't be ashamed to buy drumsounds. In most other genre's it's a normal thing to buy sounds. hence the soundlibrary sounds for the akai S series.

One the real, download/buy a 808 drum kit, keep the kicks the same, but layer your snares/hi hats/ whatever then filter it. and you would be amazed with how great they will sound.

My advice would be not to buy any samples. If you just take one day, or even just a few hours, of searching you should be able to build a large library of sounds. Look on the Roland Clan website for 808 and 909 samples that are really well done. (There's actually a lot more samples there too.) Search other forums as well. A lot of times people will share samples. Also, don't limit yourself to MPC samples. All you need are 16 bit, 44.1 KHz WAV files. Most WAV files are in this format already, so download any WAV samples. Good luck!
