Keys and Synths...

Just wanted to start a thread about Keys and Synths..

Got any favorite records (producers, players, or groups) to grab Key and Synth Samples from...

Yes and anything Rick Wakeman has graced is the best IMHO...

I just picked up this old Red Garland Trio record the other day... I don't know much about Jazz keys, but it had some sick scales on it... Nothing I could make a beat with, but I did make something I'll prolly use for an Interlude or something...

So what's everybody elses go to records for keys?

herbie handcock has some nice synth's from the seventies, he does alot of jazz stuff thats nice too.

hiroshima? damn someone is stuck in the 80s. Nah im feelin ramesy lewis, roy ayers, kool and the gang (summer madness), hmm, on keys galt mcdermot and bill evans.

I dunno, 80s synths are bigtime right now on the radio.... guess it depends if you're trying to make money or not. Many of the Triton and Motif sounds emulate 80s synths to a degree.

How about freestyle 12s? One I ran across in my collection yesterday was Rama - Don't Want You to Be on Sugarscoop (prod by Man Parrish). At the end it has the synth riff exposed. It would sound right at home all chopped in a Lil John beat for example. Anything by Jellybean Benitez in the 80s also for this type of sound.

For rhodes don't sleep on Lonnie Liston Smith. He has a lot of albums. I have 8 and still there's more.

For B3, the Maestro... Jimmy Smith. Again, many albums to choose from. Groove Drops? Hoooooeeeeee

70s synths? How about Dexter Wansel? Only two albums but watch for his name in production and keys credits on other (mostly Philly) records.

Straight up synth records are great for synths because everything's "exposed". Check out Morton Subotnic getting down on the Buchla modular for some tones and experimental stuff.

This is where reading the back of albums come into play big time. I don't have a fav, but I usually look for Moog, ARP ensemble and shit like that, don't give a **** who playin since I'mma play it over anyway.
