You don't have to have two zips but that is what most of us seem to use.....one zip drive on the MPC (internal or external) & another on the computer. If your computer has a SCSI port you can do what you were trying to do by reconnecting your one external drive.... but we have said why that isn't a good idea.
Check out some of the other zip drive threads here because there is always advice on the best way to use them..... like having one designated disk for doing transfers.
I've never heard of sequence data being altered on a disk just by taking the it out of one zip drive, putting it in another then putting it back in the first one. Sequences/midi files taken from the MPC & put in a computer program like Logic or Cubase might seem rearranged if you then put them back into the MPC with out remembering to get them back into an MPC friendly format....
