blank screen

when i turn my 2000 on the screen is blank all leds on and stay on. no noise comes from the floppy(think thats what normally happens)even if i put a disk in. the only noise it makes is a very very light tick coming from the powersupply area on the right side(dont know if thats normal or not)
the screen is good, i have an old spare screen that i know has lines going though it but still readable so swapped them to check and it was the same backlit and blank.tried shift spinning the jog wheel and nothing...
has anyone else had this happen or know something that would help me get to the bottom of this?

I've got exactly the same problem. I just replaced the PCB board and installed a new ZIP drive. Blank screen, LEDs and nothing else. I think it can be a number of things. Loose connections, no operating system, it's bust up good and proper or even the contrast on the LCD needs changing (although I doubt that). Let me know what you think. I'm not particuarly technical, I'm stabbing in the dark really and going slowly insane. I need my MPC!!!!!

you replaced the main board? i stripped mine totally down and literally examined every circuit under a big magnifing glass and bright light trying to find anything that looks fishy. thought it was a capacitor on the power board, replaced it but no change.it looked blown but maybe it was just some glue they used around it?
now i think im just gonna get another mpc that works and slowly swap parts between them till i find the culprit.im with you man this sucks!!

Check this out:

1.) Replaced the ZIP drive. Replaced the PCB board that houses the jog wheel because I had a broken jog wheel and a few sticky buttons. Switched it on. Nada, as you already know.

2.) Undid the connections and reseated them again. Nada.

3.) Put back the old PCB board. Nada.

And here I am. Plan of action: I'm putting back the floppy disc drive tomorrow although I'm certain it isn't going to make a bit of difference. Do you remember the bit when I said I'm not particuarly technical? Well, I'm a freaking MPC expert now. I'm going to put the new parts back in, in the vain hope that something will happen.

I've had this machine for about ten years and have had one or two minor problems (sticky buttons mainly and disk errors.) I put the memory expansion in sin problemas. My main concern is I've **** up a chip on the main circuitry board. In the manual (which I lost) I distinctly remember it saying don't service it or touch anything because the parts are not user serviceable. It also says that if you put any metal objects in the machine (e.g a screwdriver) it might stop working. I imagine you'd have to hack away indiscriminately at it to cause any lasting damage. The exterior is pretty tough. I've bashed away at mine at times and the worst thing that has happened is a crash. I've gigged with it, taken it to studios etc. It's a tough machine basically. Do you know if the circuitry is particuarly fragile? Do you need a sterile environment or something? I mean come on! It ain't a spacecraft! I remember this problem happening to a friend of mine. I'm not sure if he did anything to it but the machine was pretty new. He took it to a technician and he got it working again. I'm sure this happened to me one time too but it suddenly worked again.

I feel you man! I can't believe what you did and still nothing! Perhaps, we should have listened to the Akai guys when they said don't **** with it, it'll break. Damn! All I want to do is make a beat. I'm going to go back and try the whole process again. Hey, at least we got light. Mabey, they're just being tempramental.

Failing everything, I'm going to a technician. I don't want to buy a new one. I don't want to buy an second hand one. I love my MPC2000XL! It's a classic! Stay in touch man. I'm with you on this one.

HEY!!! I FIXED IT!!! THAT PUTS AN END TO ONE OF THE WORST WEEKENDS I'VE EVER HAD!!! I'D RATHER NOT SAY THIS BUT I CONNECTED THE SCSI CABLE FOR THE INTERNAL ZIP DRIVE THE WRONG WAY ROUND. SO, YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE EXPERIENCING A SIMILAR PROBLEM. PROPS TO LAMPDOG FOR POINTING THIS OUT! YOU ARE A GENIUS! THIS FORUM IS THE LICK!

but yeah, for real though check the cable to make sure it is seated correctly.

does the cable fit directly on or did you need to do some shit to get it connected? wasn't there a thread talking about making an additional cable that flips around so it fits the right way?

naw man, the ribbon cable is seated properly. But it just freezes with al the LED's on and nothing. The f-in flippy dont even start. It was working when i got it, biut its been sitting for a bit. Did some research tho, could be the mobo, but I know in my heart it aint.

okay do you have the 8 outs installed or any other options? scsi devices etc? try removing everything possible (besides the floppy since you need to boot the OS) and give it a go again... I would even suggest trying the old no good screen to see if it freezes. the LEDs staying on must be some sort of error indication. maybe the service manual has those errors mentioned in it?

i gave up on mine months ago and got a XL.
i still have a 2k motherboard around here somewhere but its probably a waste of time. if thats what the issue is with yours then im sure thats whats wrong with this one.
