this joint is sick.

I'm sure some of you may know about Poise, it's a drum software made by an independent developer.

But I just came across it this week, so I had to do a review on it.

why I like it over other drum software?

most drum sampler developers don't "get it" especially for folks like us who are used to hardware.

a simple program that let's you add multiple layers on one pad, tweak each layer, and create new sounds that we can use in our daw

this joint has up to 16 outputs, so each pad can be sent to it's own track in your daw.

mono/poly mode, note on/oneshot mode, you can link pads, you can have 8 layers per pad, adjust start/end, pitch, amp, filter, etc for each layer separately or all layers together. You can also set the pads to cut each other off, sorta like "mute groups".

it reads wav, aiff, and mpc snd format

as you can tell, i'm pretty excited about it.

only thing that may suck is that it's only a vst for windows... but if you have a mac application that can use vsts you should be good.

peep the video/review I did and lemme know what you think or if you've used it before.

I beg to differ about 'best'. Maybe 'best simplistic software drum sampler' would be a better description.

Guru can do just about everything this can, just as easily. And it has a few neat tricks up its sleeve, like resampling - that's for people who like to layer too...

but.. if it works for you...

it's not like maschine or bpm where you sample into it, just something you use to playback your drum sounds.

Ah ok, thanks saint joe

yep ur right mp3, simplest = best to me.

I have guru, its cool...but at times it's just a bit to bloated for what I want to do.

this is the best at just allowing you to load up, layer, tweak, and play.

I just don't understand why so many software drum machines miss this...trust me and I get this
question all the time. (folks looking for something to simply layer and tweak their samples)

True, Guru is very flexible, and it's routing is cool, I like the resampling too...but sometimes it's just more than you need.

Also, some may not have the money to spend on guru...even when it's onsale, this is half the price.

For a lot of folks that just want to layer sounds and tweak each layer a bit, this will be perfect.

I have guru, maschine, battery, ableton (drum racks) and though they do what they do well, I've always wished they implemented layering in a simple drag and drop way like this. To be fair, Guru is probably the closest competitor as far as layering and tweaking each layer in a quick fashion in my opinion. Battery isn't too difficult, but you have to go into the mapping options to really get your layers setup.

Maschine can layer up to 128 levels, but it's a pain to do...same thing, having to go into keymapping options.

I just wanted to bring to light another alternative :)

Oh no doubt. If simple is what u do, then do u...

And I can understand how Guru's interface can be a little intimidating. But when you get down to the core of it, Guru and Poise are pretty much the same sampler. And guru just has those 2-3 little extras that take it to another level (and that's not counting Guru's sequencer which I prefer to sequence drums there more than in any DAW...).

For me, I see no reason to use Poise when I have an MPC 1k sitting right here in front of me. If I'ma use a softsampler (or any sampler besides my 1k) its gonna be because it does something my 1k can't do. So I guess poise is just not for me... Neither is Guru really (again too much feature overlap with my 1k), but it comes in handy when I get some free time at work or on the train...

guru isn't intimidating really... its just sometimes you don't need all that.

I'd take guru as is, minus the sequencer cuz I don't like it at all... If I'm not sequencing in maschine, then it's ableton live, guru's sequencer can't touch either in my opinion. Something about guru, I dunno...always seemed clunky to me. Take all that "groove quantize" and grid sequencing out, leave the sampling engines and layering, then you'd have 8 banks of 16 pads, each holding 8 layers...with dope fx and routing options.

if they made it work like it does, just as a sampler, and took the sequencing aspect out of it, it'd be way more dope than it is, in my opinion.

the only drum machine with a sequencer I like is Maschine, because it feels and operates just like my hardware sequencers.

Yup. Totally agree. It's what I've been waiting for all these years with hardware sequencers that were just a little too limited to make it frustrating. It's the best hardware/software hybrid, probably because it's a first of its kind. It would feel like the dark ages for me to go back to a MPC now.

no doubt, I'm not saying the mpc isn't useful, I've just moved on. I pulled out the 4k a few weeks ago after a couple years, I just couldn't deal with the load times anymore.

It's fun listening to the tracks I had on it, but I def wasn't making any new ones on there, I'm not patient for stuff to load like that anymore lol.

guru was cool but the interface visually neva grabbed me id be interested to check bpm as it seems kinda smoove.

but neva knew that it was such a pain to layer on the maschine but i guess cos u got so many tracks/banks its not really gonna affect creativity.

i tried poise i neva really vibed with the demo but it looked dope from the video review

for me the software that i vibe with is reason 4 and ableton

but i pulled out the mpc1k recently and it was pretty quick but correctly load times and tracking beats out is long, and the fact u aint got tons of sounds instantly available slows shit down.

well, yeah I wouldn't compare poise to something like bpm or ableton lol, poise is just a simple drum sampler and that's it so you can't use it by itself. You can use it in live or whatever tho.

I never got into reason at all, I just didn't vibe with it.

I love live though, probably the best daw in my opinion for production.

u may as well sell ur 4k u know u aint neva going back to it, but ableton defo broke down barriers and came with a ton of innovations, i aint got deep into it but i seen peeps do crazy shit with it, i a can put shit together in there still.

any news on when the r kangz dropping that thang? I heard march madness whispers but shit the month is almost done.
