mpc500 as main sequencer question

hello,
i'm considering buying the mpc500 to use it as my sampling & sequencing machine. I intend on using Logic 8 in the beginning for the virtual instruments and some time soon with a novation nova. I got a couple of questions :

1. Can i record midi data into the mpc500 coming from Logic or nova? For example if i play a keyboard part and at the same time tweak the filter envelope, will the filter movements be recorded into the mpc500?
2. Can i do the above separately, if i have recorded a sequence from the external synth, can i go over it while playing back and tweak the filter envelope from the synth and have the changes recorded in the mpc500?

it looks like mpc500 & alesis micron will be my setup.

I went for the 500 and the MicroKorg XL, since they can both be powered by batteries. You can probably get a good 4-6 hours on batteries with both devices.

The micron is a sexy beast though if you don't mind being hooked to power.

I'm going for the micron mainly for multitimbral function, sounds rich as well with capabilities for a broad range of sounds, only downside is limited knobs for instant hands on tweaking but we'll see how things turn out, if i dive deep in it i might make it work for me, it seems to cover me for a minimal setup along side the mpc500. I can't demo either units in my town but from research and videos they seem to do most of what i'd like.

I'm going hardware for several reasons ... timing, programming with mouse and looking at computer screen isn't so groovy (for me anyway), plus its tiring and unhealthy, my hands and eyes are starting to ache.


MicroKorgs also sound very very nice!

Either board is really a blast, and pretty hard to go wrong. There are so many user created patches out there for both synths that you could spend a long time just tweaking presets and not even have to worry too much about the limited number of knobs.

I now have a dilemma, i'm seriously thinking of the microkorg, it's hands on usage seems much better than the micron. The lack of multitimbrality might be a draw back for me at first glance but i've been thinking that recording a performance as midi, overdubbing it or editing some details and then sampling the part on the mpc500 and using it in various ways might do it for me.

i ordered my mpc500 !!! meanwhile i've been doing excercises in my head lol reading the manual and forums and it seems that there's a work around for every case. anxious to get my hands on it

The MicroKorg XL has two Timbre's per patch... so you can technically split the keyboard and work with it that way. Sure same Midi Channel, but I'm pretty sure there is nothing stopping you from splitting the keyboard Timbre 1 Note 0-64 and Timbre 2 Note 65-128 or whatever floats your boat. Plus the XL has a switch so you can switch between tweaking Timbre 1 and Timbre 2. Not sure if the MicroKorg does this as well as I haven't played with it too much.

Should be able to do two patches at the same time though.

After long research setup is done and working !
due to budget i skipped the outboard synth and taking advantage of logic express 8 as sound module which covers me better actually, mpc500 as sequencer/sampler, axiom 25 as midi interface & keyboard, mackie 402-vlz3 to connect everything and krk's rp5 for monitors.

All is connected, communicating, sounding well, working for me, without hick-ups ! Groovy i would say I programed something, doing exercises, trying different things, reading the manual and the forum. mpc500 rocks.
