Mixers

Okay, now I know most of y'all use a mixer somewhere in the lab, wether its to mix from the mpc out to whatever ur recording into. My question is, do you use a full EQ mixer(mid, high, lows, pan so on, an actual mixer) or a DJ mixer when running from sample source to MPC. I use a lil behringer 3 band mixer, but im wondering what, if any, benifits would be in replacing it with a DJ mixer.

Ah DJ mixer is just gonna help with the Pre's going into the MPC and if you buy a cheap one it's not even worth it cause the Pre's are gonna suck.

thanks for the tip. I got a Art DJpreII, gonna save up for a new, better pre, but it gets the job done.

Yeah, IMO you're downgrading if you're looking to replace your main mixer rather than adding the DJ joint to compliment your rig.

My main mixer is 4 band with 2 semi parametric mids, but then again, it was designed to meet certain pro level specifications. I don't think you'll find a dj mixer with features like that that would rival a studio mixer at the present. For one, there's way more routing possibilities that can be done with a studio mixer vs. not being able to do the same on a dj mixer.

If you want to up your game a little, try going through a real good pre-amp first, something other than the ART, before going to the mixer.

when i had to much gear i had a studiomaster 24 channel mixer with 1 high 2 mids and 2 lows i picked up for 120
ran the turntable through it then ran the turntable through my dj mixer. id definatly stick with a mixer
maybe even of older era for the warmth and certain pres

cosign.. once i get my renovations downstairs done I can drag out my 20 channel studiomaster.. they are well priced for what you get.

exactly each channel has an input and individual out effects return and send channel mute and mine had 8 busses and 2 main outs

I got mine mainly for drums. I have a drum kit from around that era... and you know what? the preamps on the studiomasters sound good. nice and warm... and they cost pennies.

for dj mixer I currently use

has some pretty cool digital effects too


then for a main mixer
like the compressor built in on 1st 4 channels


if your able to eq before sampling, the less you will need afterwards so it helps

I go from TT to Vestax mixer to 7 band graphic equalizer to mpc's in. I like to eq before I sample and roughly direct samples into certain frequency ranges.

From mpc's out to my phonic firewire helixboard. The helixboard is ok. Sometimes I use the eq's on this one, but the final eqing to make it fit in the mix is all done in Cubase.

Going to upgrade soon though, I'm running out of inputs and would like to have some more hands on control when making the beat.

I am getting a flat line after recording audio samples from a turntable thru a dj mixer into the mpc. There is sound and the mpc is recording because there is playback. However, when looking at the same recorded sample in trim mode there is a flat line instead of the normal peaks and valleys.

what MPC u got?

if you record at a low volume but your main volume is super high its gunna sound normal but not show up
now if you record hot and then play back low same thing only it should show up

probably a 2000xl by the sound of the problem he's having. the volume needs to be turned down and the gain upped... like boxcutter said.
