You should be able to audition HD tracks from the waveform screen (window button on HD View). Best would be to have the wheel used like a jog wheel to play audio back and forth, or at least the TO and FROM pads to play from specific points.. I'm using HD tracks a lot recently and its very fiddly to edit - I often have to load as a sample and trim in therre to get the timing right - shouldnt have to do this..

but it would be cool to have a mixdown/render mode like on the MV 8000/8800.

The MV doesn't have a render mode.
All the modes of mixdown on the MV are realtime, while rendering is non-realtime process.

The 5k does have a mixdown mode.

right but can the HD recorder mixdown external hardware synths without the need of a mixer or resampling?

With the MV, i could connect a synth to the inputs, tap out something via midi, then mix it down on the MV.. no need for a mixer or tracking out to the computer..

Your saying the 5k can mixdown external hardware synths?

Yes.
It's a much simpler process than what the MV has.

You can bounce to a pair of outputs, to a track, to a file etc.
It allows you to determine what is included in the bounce.
You select to include:
-Sequencer tracks
-Recorded audio
-Effects
-Mixer automation
-Input thru

In any combination you require as well as selecting to save it as a 16 or 24 bit file.

I would like to be able to record track mutes (track mute screen) to sequences in real time in song mode (for final mixdown). Or better yet create a audio (.wav) file directly from playing the track mute screen in real time without even going into song mode ;) This would be my favorite!

My 2 cents:

1) a trackmixer including fx, assignable outs, and a solo button FOR THE WHOLE SONG NOT JUST FOR A SEQUENCE!
2) a loop button in songmode
3) Master BPM / Sequence BPM option (like on the 4000)
4) a solo function for the program (pad) mixer
5) more support for native legacy Akai formats (5000 doenst even load .akp's in proper)

I'm still reading the manual so I can't tell much about the machine YET!

But one thing get me bugged... if the machine has an internal synth why not adding a VOCODER linked to it and to Mic In?!

Well, it's the only thought I have... for now!

Biggest feature request would have been for the 5k to have built in ADAT outs.

That work.

How can you use them with a DAW if they won't function at 24/48?
Not being able to select the format makes them useless and since they are standard you are already paying for them.

In light of the forthcoming Yamaha Motif XF....I would offer up a hardware specification change.....

An MPC with 2 GBs of flash ram similar to what Yamaha is doing. Earlier MPCs had 8 MB flash ram board but you still had to load samples from flash ram into volatile ram in order to use the samples.

Having an MPC with 2 GB of sounds at your finger tips as soon as you turn it on would be a game changer.
