if a product says "phono" input that means it should be pre-amped.

DJ mixers are designed for tables so they include the preamps.. also the kaoss pad 2 and 3 has preamps. any of those things can be found for cheap but personally i like the kaoss pad route because it has a good multi purpose.


oh and regular mixers like the euroracks dont have preamps because they weren't intended for turntables like dj mixers were.

So in everybodys opinion, if I had to pickout a setup what would it look like? Under $200.

I think that Eurorack has only a mic pre. Under $200, I would do:

TT - from craigslist = ~$50
Phono pre - NAD PP2 = $130

Then a future upgrade:

Cart - Grado Green = $80

Since yer, sampling you (and I) want the cleanest sound possible. The NAD pre costs the same as an average DJ mixer, except it's "audiophile" "approved". <--- The choice is pretty easy to make thar. The Grado cart costs the same as a DJ cart, but once again it's "audiophile" "approved".

Some "well-known" people sample using the PT-01 or Handytrax, so any turntable from craigslist will be fine. Make sure you can change the TT's cartridge tho.

Im no expert, but some cartridges/needles are NOT meant to be backcued and scratched. So, maybe take that into perspective.

audiophile carts tend to be elliptical (they are long and thin, to sit in the groove) whereas DJ carts are spherical, and will handle scratching and cueing better

Long as it doesn't matter what TT I pickout I should be fine.

Be careful with the Grado's, they don't do well with some TT's. They'll hum because the cart isn't shielded. Some work arounds like shielding the motor, but that's a bTTCH.

You can get a decent deck like the TT200 (which I have) and get the Shure M44-7h, this will run you a little over $200, but it is well worth it.

Then after that, get some Gruv Glide to destatic your records and clean out the grooves.

It's a good investment.
