can you believe i got 2600 records for 150 bones?

anyways, i got pi;les and piles of records. io found some really dope records here and there. i bumped into some familiar samples already, it pretty amazing..

anyways, so i got the weekend to myself, and my MPC needs some serious attention, you know how it is...

so i want to come up with a decent product by sunday night, and im challenging myself to do so.

heres my question, if y9ou got a stack of records, and dont know where to even start looking, how to you got about finding what you need?

and when you hear that tight sample, do you start to plan in your head how you going to construct your track? or sorta take them all in and deal with them later?

i noticed some cats are taking whole loops and makign bars out of them, im personally against that, i mean anyone can do that. myfocus is to creat melodies outta small samples and maybe some dope synths, then construct it from there.

also, how much time do you cats spend behind the table looking for samples? im finding im wasting hours and hours a week, and only somedays i get lucky.

do you pull up a box to you table and listen to vinyl from start to end, or just skip the needle across? throw on a videogame and chill? bang your girlfriend, then when you hear a dope sample leave her there with her legs open, whats your process?

any feedback is appreaciated, im not asking any specific help, just more a conversation topic about sampling in general, sample techniques.

i just sit in the lab and smoke and listen to shit and make mental notes. Sometimes i just grab random records and get down. just take ur time and practice and listen everyday. also a good thing to do is when u put the needle on the record listen to the whole track before u sample. I found i get a lot more out of it when i do that, and also i think its kinda of respect to the artist im jackin.

Yea sometimes I'm in adifferent mood to try different things... I usually listen to the whole track... I can pretty much tell in the first 30 seconds whether it's my speed or not... So on thos tracks I just skip across the track and see if any open samples pop up (gotta be careful though cause sometimes you skip over the only open sample on there... It's happened more than a few times)...

If there's something dope on it right away I'll usually listen to the whole track like Bing... I do this because I see if there's any other samples I can use as a transition or hook... And also to just grasp a mood of the track... Helps when constructing...

As far as finding vinyl to listen to from stacks... Just grab whatever you're in the mood to listen to... I mean if you're in a Jazzy mood and you just picked up an Ozzy Osbourne album... You're prolly not gonna be feeling anything... Just go with your mood and see if you get lucky.. Sometimes you do... Sometimes you don't...

just listen to track as you have time, thats what i do i get up in the moring turn the tv on for my son turn on the system and grab a record and while i wash the dishes and make breaks-fast i listen a concentrate on where i can sample from. sometimes i have to got through a few records before somthing hitz me.

what takes me a while is diggin in my own vault, cause i gotz sh!t evrywhere.

but yeah i pretty much depends on which type mood your in.

good luck with that

I don't know if you DJ'd before or not, but if you look at the grooves on vinyl, a lot of times you can see the areas of breaks and/or open instruments by the change-up in the size of the grooves. This is not always the case but the majority of the time it is. If I don't have a lot of time that day, I'll skim through records checking out the groove changes.

how the hell did u get that deal man?...looks like u need a warehouse for that shyt

By MATT_MEDEIROS Sat Aug 28, 2004 1:36 am
got it out of a local newpaper in the classfieds.. the deal was 1000 records for 50$, i got 3 of them deals, but he cheesed me out about 400 records, probably between my first and second trip to his house. 2600 was the count anyways, withing a hundred or so

he used to auction records, and hes a collector. he collects EVERY record ever pressed, just cause hes a freak, and this goes back to them PHONOGRAPH fragile pieces of sh!t.

i asked if i could take more than 3000 off him, he said thats all he'll sell me. then a week later he had the same ad place and i got a friend to call, he said he wont sell them to any kids anymore

after listening to a record, put a sticky note on it saying what kind of breaks are it and what song it on and so on... or you can write it all in a journal... so if you need a certain sample just check your sticky notes... this is how quite a few top notch producers handle their samples.

Vinnie Paz is the Fat one with finger... Stoupe is the shady mofo...

Stoupe is like that though... You hear how his beats are all deep and emotional, but if you met him ni person he's the shyest guy you'll ever meet... I was shocked...

And Vinnie comes off all hard on his records... He's a real nice guy though...
