Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

i'm using one sample with the 16 levels tuning, and i would like to stretch the duration of a particular note. is this possible without using the time stretch feature? in the edit note duration screen, it seems that this is possible but it isn't working. my manual doesn't say what is meant by "value" . any help is appreciated.

1) go to the trim screen (shift 5)
2) bring up the sound you want to extend
3) go to the loop function. turn it on.
4) set the beginning and end points. basically what you want is to create a seamless loop at the end of the sample/sound (or whatever loops best) so that once you hit the pad it plays the beginning as normal but will not end until you let go of the pad. You may need to zoom in to fine tune the loop points but once you get it.. you’re all set.

that's pretty much it. I think that the pad will automatically be set to "note off" poly but if not you can always edit that in the program menu (shift 6). Another way you might want to extend a sample is with the reverb/delay if you have the fx card installed but it might note work the exact way that you want. A combination of light reverb and this looping technique produces some great results as we all know a sample that's looped in this manner looses its natural decay. Reverb can fill in some of the missing detail. Samples that cut off abruptly (unless intended) do not sound all that appealing or realistic (that comment about the reverb on the mpc might be considered an oxymoron LOL!! well for those with the fx card installed ya’ll know what I’m saying. I guess it's convenience not detail right? :/).

thanks -{n8}-, that seems to be the solution, but i'm having problems still. here is what's happening: i want to stretch the duration of the note so i holds from 02.01.48 until 02.04.48. there is another note(same note, different tuning) immediately before this note located at 02.01.24. it seems like the just mentioned note cuts off the one i would like to stretch. does this have to do with the "note off" selection in the parameters section? if so, is it not possible to change "note off" to "poly" or "mono" when using the loop function?

I'm not sure how one would be able to play a "note off" as a "mono" or "poly" as those are just single hits while the "note off" has a user controled length/decay. Maybe the solution might be to use the same sound on separate pads but both with their own poly setting. From what I gather you want to be interchanging "note off" with "mono" correct? record the "mono" pad on a separate track and use the "note off" on a separate track to touch it up.

If that doesn't get the desired effect try to get more exact "note off" information input into the sequence. You can do this not only using the pads but also with step edit (as I mentioned before). That way you'll get those precise input points without having to play it perfect or with quantisize on. Also the changing of the temop does not affect the notes played on a "note off" pad as they will stay on cue within the time signature they are assigned to.

What is very troubling about the whole "note off" function is that you can never play more than one sound from one pad at the same time while recording on a track (say doing a tune in 16 note mode). But you can record that data many times over in a separate track and never have the notes interfear with eachother. Because of this handycap you can't always play your mellody as is but on the plus side it does makes you think more about it's construction in more detail (that or just copy the pad over a couple of times at different pitches) :P

n8 I think you can record more than one pad with gate (note off) and 16 levels, the problem is that whaen you release one pad, the note off generated cuts off all other held notes. so no playing legato.

Thanks for the elaboration bro. It never occured to me, that someone might misinterpret my words in that context. I should really get those technical terms down ;P

Hey, thanks bro. I find it's a very humbling experience to be able to help someone out through a problem. With so many producers on this site alone, all with their own individual styles and techniques, one can't help but imagine all the possibilities the mpc posses. Keep on hitting those beats bro.. it will pay off in the end.

Nuff respect to all mpc headz
