I went through this, with the MPC500. There were major bugs, and it took forever just to get Akai to fix them. Then like the 5000 got OS2, the 500 got some updates, someone actually replied to an email, and it seemed like maybe they were going to care. Then nothing.
I didn't like some limiting factors with the 500 that Akai could've helped fix, so I wanted to try a bigger MPC. I would've bought the 5000 for the slightly higher hardware specs, but after my experience with the 500 I didn't think they'd pull through with making the OS all it could be.
So I bought a 2500 and JJOS-XL. It's not perfect. I've found some issues that really bother me, that they won't fix. But today, I downloaded and installed an update that fixed one major problem that was slowing me down, and also gained a surprise new feature that I love.
I feel your pain if you own a 5000 and have to rely on Akai. They just can't seem to cut it for some reason. I don't know why, maybe they don't have the money, maybe they don't have the skills. But whatever it is, Akai drops the ball. Luckily JJ picks it up and there's an option.
I doubt Akai would do it, but you can add your voice to http://akaios.com/ and maybe Akai might wake up and realize that they're hurting themselves here. There are people who do not buy the 5000 solely because Akai cannot keep up with the OS and give people what they want.
I advise that anyone out there looking to buy a MPC consider the inability of Akai to fix bugs and add features to their firmware. That marks down the 500/5000 and makes the 1000/2500 the tools of choice since you can use JJOS.
Akai, buy JJOS and rehire them, or release the code, or step up your game.
