SIMPLE question about Mic's

I'll be buying a new mic in the near future.

Condensor or Dynamic?

What are the pro's and con's of either, and which would benefit me more in a low-budget home studio?

My homeboy(where we record as of now) has a MXL2003 Condensor sitting on a shock mount that gets the job done, but i want know... whats the best bang for my buck?

dynamic will be cheaper, as a condensor mic requires phantom power from the mixer, and a dynamic mic can be plugged straight into a mic input.

the condensor mic, even a cheap 100 dollar one will sound better then most dynamic mic's in a controlled studio environment. I grappled with the same thing and copped an oktava. Guitar center buys all of them from the manufacturer in russia, and distributes them here, which is why GC always has a ton of em on "sale".

Id get a condnsor, 100%.

The good doctor is on point...Oktava MK-319 to be exact. Backed with a tube mic pre-amp you can't lose. Damn I've said too much. Now cats are gonna have my same set-up...

I use a Groove Tube AM-52 into a Joe Meek VC1Q, but you cannot beat a Studio Projects C-1 Condenser Mic for the $. Or, an RNC from FMR, either- an amazing compressor for under $200. FMR now sells the RNP, the Really Nice Preamp, but it's more like $475. I would definitely go with a condenser, but if you need to go dynamic, look at the Senheiser MD-421. A mic generally used for toms and guitar cabinets, it can sound great on vox.

Here's a cool deal: The Studio Projects C-1 for $199, the Really Nice Compressor for $159, both with free shipping. Hard to beat that combo at that price.

Here's something to blow your mind -

Chris Cornell = SM57
Chino = SM58

I would personally go expensive dynamic (MD421) over cheap condenser (all of the aforementioned) anyday. Same $$$ range.

If you get the 421, there's a switch on the bottom of them to select Voice or Instrument. It's pretty versatile.

If you do decide to get a cheap condenser, test them out at the store and choose the one with the most body. The high end on most cheapo condenser mics sound horrible.

i think the best choice would be a røde nt1000 (nt1 if on a tight budget).
at about 250 eur they are a great deal -- just go and try 'em out if you
don't believe it. it might be a matter of taste but one thing isn't
-- that any behringer/studio projects/t-bone product isn't going to work.
especially on these the high frequency problem freq mentioned is going
to be so obvious it hurts.

also, cutting corners on the preamp stage will come back to haunt you.

but that oktava is mad nice for the $$$ jsut remember to NEVER listen to what the Guitar center peeps tell you.

I've got the AKG c-3000b. It's great. Well I love it anyway and I have not heard any bad comments regarding it. It's about $300 though. I'm sure there's others that are comparable for less. I heard a lot about the Studio Projects and Oktavas and I'm sure they're nice. Go to G.C. or something and listen to em.
