Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

emptysea you just dont stop do you dude. why are you in these forums still? All you do is try to promote the machine.

Can you take the machine over to a studio or friends house w/o laptop to record/jam? Can you sample directly into the Machine Hardware? Can You chop samples and sequence with it w/o a computer? Does it have multiple Audio/ MIDI in's outs, without help of a computer? Asnwers are No Dude, MPC still crapps over the maschine for dedicated sampler sequencer HARDWARE. Maschine is prob cool, but its still software w/ a MIDI controller.

In all honestly, if you arn't employ'd by NI, then I feel really bad for you.

Yes.
SV1200 wrote:Can you sample directly into the Machine Hardware?

That's kind of an ignorant question since Maschine is not a standalone hardware but a hybrid although in practice it's workflow is very much like what you would find on a standalone hardware.. You can do the sampling by just using the Maschine hardware. The audio would go into whatever audio interface you're using with your computer.

SV1200 wrote:Can You chop samples and sequence with it w/o a computer? Does it have multiple Audio/ MIDI in's outs, without help of a computer?

Yet more ignorant questions. Maschine's software lives on a computer so obviously you need the computer.

SV1200 wrote:MPC still crapps over the maschine for dedicated sampler sequencer HARDWARE.

A strange claim to make as Maschine is not a standalone hardware (meaning not needing a separate computer) and it doesn't claim to be one. However, it DOES have a dedicated hardware which gives you the type of workflow you find in a standalone hardware. The software just happens to live on a computer. The combination is much more powerful and versatile than a MPC in my opinion and evidenced by many people continuing to choose Maschine over the MPC.

SV1200 wrote:Maschine is prob cool, but its still software w/ a MIDI controller.

If you mean that it's no different than using a typical MIDI controller with computer software, you couldn't be more wrong. It really does compare more to MPC than a software + midi controller setup.

I don't notice any latency with Maschine. To say that Maschine has "more latency" shows that you're not familiar with what latency actually is. Latency is a factor of your CPU speed/efficiency, and how good your audio interface is. It has nothing to do with Maschine. It's 2010. There's no excuse anymore to be worried about latency.

Take your own advice bruh and don't put so much of your EGO into your gear

and

While you're there GTFOH

It has more latency and anyone worth half there weight in salt knows that computers are yet to get down to the latency of MPC's. FACT and don't deny it. USB and firewire bus latencies don't allow it to get there. Maschine works off the USB buss and depending on your soundcard you will have more latency. Maschine hence by the way it works and what it needs has latency.

Don't accuse me of not knowing what latency is you throwaway, inflammatory, intelligentsia, salesman.

If you can't feel this then your timing is suspect. Are you a musician or not? Musicians can feel latency differences down to quite small amounts.

Now you're talking kaka and I still reckon you work for NI.

Your sales schtick is starting to get embarrasing.

Stick to facts mate. You're wrong on this one.

lol, that one is funny... because you both got points... you could bring it, but without the computer it is less effective than banging on the table. lol... next jam I go to I am bringing my mpd16 by itself with nothing else... not even the midi cable or power adapter.. hahaha.

Did you know that MPC has latency too? There is no such thing as zero latency. I've used MPCs for a long time and I experience no noticeable latency in Maschine. Basically, latency is a weak excuse. Next!

Both have points but this thread is about saintjoe's 4k retirement not a mpc vs maschine. How about emptysea make a beat so people can listen to it. You know record the video of your process in another thread please. It would be better for people to see rather than just talk. Show and prove. And try to leave the mpc out of it cuz others probably are much better at the mpc than you and work fast like Jaisu, Boonie, and others in this forum.

yeah and I am not really interested in how amazing the beat is because that is subjective anyways... it is neat seeing people using their own methods and workflows to make music. Even watching MPC videos is neat just to see how people do things in particular situations while hearing the result.

actually it was more about how I hadn't even turned it on in over 2 years and it came right up and worked with no problems

And despite the quality of the product, I had already moved on in those years....but it's still a great instrument.

No hard drive issues, no memory issues, nothing lol. It just worked.

I don't get all caught up in the mpc vs maschine thing because it's all about what works for the person, and depending on what you're doing and your workflow, one may be better than the other. It's really about the individual.

Maschine can't replace the mpc as the center of a hardware setup...but I sold all my hardware so it's not much of an issue for me anymore.

mpc, bpm, maschine, mv, asr, sp1200, whatever! It's all good, just have fun and make music...

cuz if we talkin straight software....then ableton live has to be mentioned and Maschine aint ready for that yet! But I like the combo of the two

MOTU is working on a controller for bpm...when that drops, I'll finally try bpm and if it's better, I'll switch lol...it's just about what works best for me man, I really don't care what it is

and on the note of the motu making a controller... I hope it wont be some small little portable controller designed to fit in a backpack like everyone is making these days. we need huge control surfaces with dozens of knobs and sliders man... something that looks badass and what not. something oversized and the width of 2 mpc 60's side by side! that would be awesome. also you should be able to throw it at a moving train without it breaking.

okay enough fantasizing hahaa.

You are right about the beats being subjective. Their are tons of MV, SP303, SP1200, and Ableton with great producers working with their units making great music. What helps is how they work with thier units and the numbers of steps they take in the process too. You may know the click from UK Jaisu, Ed Strong and others a great group of producers. Jaisu on 2xl and Ed Strong on logic and minikorg both make hot beats using samples in my opinion and I have both gear but I like Jaisu sampling and editing workflow cuz I can see less steps is needed and it is more similiar. ED strong samples into logic and it is cool however, the sample editing for me is mousing around which isn't for me. Nevertheless the beats are fire from Mr Strong. We all have to find the tools for our style of craftsmeship. But we can watch a great working in progress and learn which will benefit us.

Actually alot of great did watch and learn or semi tutored under some established or more experienced producer in the beginning stage or happened to be in the recording session. Alchemist, mob deep, primo, Pete rock, Cube, Blaze, Kanye, and a gang of others regardless of the mantra I and most of the forum stated in the past of read the manual and learn yourself. Being quiet and observing others styles to incorporate into our own seems to be the best way to learn it is natural learning. Show and prove.

No it isn't, cause I can feel it and with intricate patterns it becomes more noticeable. Not a weak excuse.

MPC's are still superior when it comes to latency. FACT. You can't debate science man and it you try then that is ego and/or agenda.

By the way I like Maschine. I can't wait for the days when we can get the payability of an MPC into a PC setup.

I have said all along use what works best for you. Personally I like it all.

What I don't like is people trying to sell products on here or hyping something while not acknowledging shortcomings.

Make beats with whatever you got. I would never try to say something is better than something else. What is the point?

hahahahahaha! That would be SICK...I think it will look exactly like what's on their box, the device everyone thought bpm was when it debuted at 2009 winter namm lol. People thought it was hardware cuz the picture looked like it! They should have just did it then.

I'm sure it will have some faders on it, since bpm has faders on it's interface.

You keep failing to realize that if you're experiencing latency it has to do with your specific setup, not Maschine. People are happy using Maschine without noticing latency. That is a fact. It seems like it's more about your ego seeing as it's you getting all worked up about the fact that Maschine is being recommended here. Lighten up, bro. Why are you getting your panties in a bunch about me liking Maschine so much and sharing info about it?
sensei wrote:I have said all along use what works best for you. Personally I like it all.

That's what I've been saying too. It's all about what works best for you, definitely. Just don't get all upset because a competing product that threatens MPCs gets recommended as an option.
sensei wrote:I would never try to say something is better than something else.

Really?

Emptysea he isn't the only one. People aren't upset over maschine, they are tried of salesmanship. Give it a rest a second time you made your point.

yeah man, I thought it was hardware and was shocked when I first saw the thread here mentioning that there wasn't even a control surface for it. These days with photoshop you can never tell... even hardware pics from manufacturers look the same as bpm did when it was launching. but these companies these days focusing on portability is cool, but someone should for sure go the route of making their surface the size of a mackie 8 bus.

a project mix, an mpd, one of those novation knob control surfaces in one with extra bells and whistles.

my favourite part of the roland mv8000 is the size and spread out buttons on the machine. you got that shit on your desk and it cant be pushed aside.
