MPC users guide to Zip drives

i have my 2kxl plugged into an external 250mb zipdrive via scsi, and my macbookpro plugged in with a usb 250 zip drive. im sort of ocd about backing up shit up so ive been trying to back up my mpc zip disc files in a folder on my laptop. however, after i eject the zip disc that was in the mpc with all my .pgm, sequences,etc and put it into the usb zip drive for my macbook, all the files get erased? i know you can transfer from a computer to mpc via zip, but is it impossible the other way around? i just don't want all my work on some zips, can't trust that!

If my mpc2kxl says "scsi not ready" does that mean my zip is dead?

Recently i've discovered some zip discs at my work stuffed in an old drawer.
The label indicates it's 750 mb! Do these also work in mpc's? Thought of buying a
cardreader for my mpc2000xl but if i can snatch those zips for free i'll save a lot of cash and gain a huge storage space compared to my floppy drive at the mo.

You cannot use them because Iomega never made a SCSI Zip 750MB drive and those disks only work in the 750MB drive. As far as SCSI drives, they only made 100MB and 250MB external zips and 100MB internal zips.

Oooowww. Too bad. Guess i'm also going down the cardreader route....

yo my mpc doesnt recognise the zip drive on scsi-5, doesnt come up with "scsi not ready"...ive done all the apparent right things like flicking both switches down on the zip drive, loading it first and whatever....i dunno whats going on, might be a blown fuse but then how do i know if its blown or not?????

ive also read on this forum that apparently you cant blow the fuse on the 2000xl????????????

SORTED IT. this to anyone who had the above problem. my scsi adaptor from 25 to 50 had some bent connectors, once i straightened them up the situation straightened itself out aswell. peace.

i have an internal 250mb zip. its dope. just wondering if people are using those jaz drives that go up in GBs for their storage needs? anyone know if these are a pain? probably only can use one externally. i might be in the market for one if its worth it. i would switch over to CF reader, but i have like 30 disks of sounds, beats, songs, etc...

Yeah I use them for back up.
Will probably get howls of derision from other members cos they are notoriously unreliable but, I have been using them for a long time now without issue.
Like I said I only use them to back up work I have saved elsewhere (I'm not that stupid). I also use zip drives and card writers so have plenty of choices when it comes to storage media.
You might ask why I bother with the jaz? Well, I have like over 35 jaz disks and 4 or 5 drives. When these were new , they would have cost a small fortune (more than an MPC ) so it would seem churlish not to use them at all.
I have an internal 2GB Jaz drive in my S6000 although I will soon be replacing this with a PCD 47B Card drive.

If you can get a Jaz drive and disks very cheap or free, I would say give them a go but, don't keep important work solely on the Jaz. And if you lose your work, i wouldn't come running here complaining. People on the forum are likely to say "told you so".


btw. Last time I saw new Jaz disks for sale (about 10 or more years ago), they were about 65 British pounds each.

i ended up copping it. hopefully it'll be in the mail soon so i can start banging out tracks on the 2000xl, im suprised i got it for only 20$?

when i save wavs,pgms,seq,etc onto the zip disc via scsi on the mpc2000xl, would i be able to back up those files anywhere else? preferably on my computer harddrive? if so, how?

You;d need another zip drive, one with a USB cnnection that can plug into your computer.
As it says in my original post, keep a seperate zip disk to use for the transfers just in case of accidents. You don't want to put your only copy of your work in the computer in case it mulchs it.
and one more thing..... Keep your file names to 8 characters or less.

i've been reading that the zip drives go corrupt after a while. what does this exactly mean? and does this contain external scsi's too/?
