alright. i already have the m-audio 1814. i am looking to upgrade my A/D and D/A converters by buying the rme multiface 2. i already have a seperate preamp. i mostly record vocals and track beats from my mpc. has anyone ever owned or is experienced wit a/d convertion quality of both hardware. is it worth the 600 difference from the m-audio

Not to knock m-audio or anything, but in most cases you get what you pay for. M-audio makes some good stuff but you dont see people comparing kia rios to lambourghini diablos.

i can't compare the two since i never had an m-audio interface, but i did hava an RME Multiface, i strongly reccommend it, top quality in hardware, drivers and support, also the lowest latency if you're into software instruments. The converters are excellent, what you hear is what is recorded, very clear.

I had even used it with an old crappy pentium III pc and never ever had any problems.

yep super stable drivers,low latency,solid build...
wait a lil they are about to bring out new a little interface with dsp so you gonna get an eq on every channel...

pull over, i though the rme mutliface already had some sort of DSP system.

I know RME is better than M-audio. has anyone personaly experienced the difference though, im also not talking about he cheap m-audio units im talking about 1814 in specific, this has the same a/d converters as the project i/o which i see next to alchemist. i will test the unit out my self and compare it to the mutliface2. but somthing in my gut tells me the difference will be barely hearable. i know im porbably gona get burned for this but still

I cannot comment on M-AUDIO but I used to own an E-MU 1212m (almost the same converters) before switching to RME and I can tell you that you cannot spot any real difference in audio quality until...you pump up the volume all the way up! The RME can drive any set of monitors to their limits without clipping or distorting the output, hands down.

Eh? Sorry man, but this makes no sense. What bearing has convertor quality or drivers or anything else for that matter have to do with gain running on the outs?

We test convertors based on a number of criteria, THD, dynamic range, S/N, slew rates across multiple devices, buffering and so on. Dik to do with volume.

i was always wondering, what do slow (thats a fitting adjective if im right) slew rates sound like?

so what does the monitors' amplifier do then? i suppose you don't connect passive monitors directly to your sound card ??? i don't understand.

am i wrong to think that the term slew rate is mostly used in the context of the outputs of audio gear? and 'structured' makes me think that a certain 'imperfection' is wanted in the gear... is that so? or is 'badly structured' a cool word for 'not allowing fast changes in output'? :)
another question :p what does a typical presentation of badly structured slew rate sound like?
