Hey people whats cracking?

I have recently updated to JJOS 1 as per recomendations of many of the fine peeps on this very forum and you guys were right...what a difference!!!

However I am having some problems with the "POLYPHONIC ISSUE OF DEATH"

Basically when Im making a sequence with the sounds in my programme im playing away quite the thing...Played in a cheeky 4 bar loop as my hook added some hats then some carefully placed snares and then i thought id change the note tempo for the kicks to 1/16-3 to give it a slight roll

All was well untill i done the latter and before I knew it the samples were cutting out and not playing in unity and harmony the way "I WANT THEM TO!!!!"

So I came on here and researched it using the search function which proved usefull and gave me the understanding that I may be running out of polyphony ????

I would understand this if I was using layered complicated samples but this is a very basic beat to be honest....now I changed the drums to mono and it was still happening?? The programme Im using is also set to Poly so.....

What the feck am I doing wrong????

I would appreciate anyone who could spare the time to explain how this happens and what I should do as I said ive followed the advice posted on the forum

I also noticed that when people did ask the question alot of them got replys like "It works ok for me on JJOS 2" or similar....just so those people know THAT DOESNT HELP and surely betrays the point of this forum

Some people dont have the natural gift of being able to produce excellent music and so have to work very hard and research on here etc to build a knowledge base from which they can improve so mybe if you dont have anything constructive to say then say nuttin!!!!!

Rant over

Thanks in advance to anyone who could shed any light in my dark and dreary situation lol

Keep on keeping on guys and gals!!!

watch the voice monitor carefully as your sequence plays back.

mute everything & then unmute each sample one by one and check the voice monitor. find out which sample is eating up all your voices. do a little detective work.

tight loops (a looped snare or cymbal hit that trails off) are main culprits as each loop eats up a voice if they are overlapping.

convert stereo samples to mono. set the individual samples to mono in the program screen.

BUT...

you might not have a polyphony issue (the voice monitor will tell you for sure). you might have accidently set some MUTE GROUPS in the program screen. check that also.

Thanks for the reply and yeah your right its certain samples eating up the voices which I find suprising with such a powerful machine but hey such is life

On the plus side the quality of my beats has increased greatly since I got JJOS 1 i just find it so much easier to work with!!!

If your reading this and your undecided.........do it......do it.......ddddoooooooo iiiiiitttt!!!

Thanks again for the reply

Don't forget to make sure that Samples that don't need to be stereo (plenty of drums/basses for example) are converted to mono, otherwise you're using up double your polyphony for essentially no reason.

Also, if you have samples that have an excessively long silent or at least inaudible tail you might want to either trim off the end in sample mode or convert the sample to Note On. Playing silence can eat up polyphony like no tomorrow and is probably not what you want. You can always cut the sample short, use Fade Out and then slap a reverb onto your FX to help add the ambiance.

Yeah Ive started converting drums etc to Mono now which helps a bit and Ive also been trimming them.

Thanks for the advice and reply Tao il try the fade out and reverb option that sounds like a quality idea

Keep on keeping on
