Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Do any of you use any cool external filters or effects with your MPC on a regular basis? I hate to give away one of my "secrets", but since I'm still in the basement below underground, I'll say this: the Sherman Filterbank is on almost every beat I've ever made.....sometimes really subtly to just add a tiny bit of crunch, sometimes with the resonance cranked and the gain knob about broken off to get some REALLY dirty beats....I REALLY want to get a Mutronics Mutilator as well....something about those warm filter sweeps.

Post here if there's any one piece of gear that seems to be permanently hardwired into your MPC like me.... :-)

When I had a borrowed Yamaha 03D digital mixer for a couple of years it was the effects, dynamics & EQ on that I couldn't manage without. The preset compressors are brilliant & you get them on every channel, including effect sends & returns. The 4 band parametric EQs & the delays are some of the best I've used. Also I could automate everything & record fades & eq sweeps on the MPC.

When I had to return it I just couldn't go back to my old Mackie analog mixer. That is one of the reasons I've moved to Logic for mixing.

Logic is terrific to mix in. Usually my process is something along the lines of coming up with a basic beat, laying down a bassline and melody, adding in any kind of "atmospheric" samples and little drops, then track everything through the 8 outs to Logic. That way I get the benefit of plugins for compression, etc, that far outperform my outboard compressors. They're DBX compressors, but only the 266XLs, and while they sounds pretty damned good on drums, they're not really all that for most things I record. I have to keep at least one of them around, though, because the output from the Sherman is MAD spiky and unpredictable. The compressor at least smooths out the peaks. It's REALLY REALLY easy to smoke a pair of good monitors with the Sherman, too.....have to watch the subbass. I have smaller driver monitors, so I don't get a ton of low end (I've just gotten used to the level the bass should be at, like any other monitors), but I did see the cones moving slowly once in and out from the Sherman's output, like it was at like 15 Hz or something trying to play through 5 1/4" drivers. NOT good. The monitors still sound great, though.....I DID blow out the tweeters in some hifi speakers before I had the monitors though. The resonance on the Sherman is SICK. You can go anywhere from adding a subtle edge to sound to mangling it WAY beyond recognition. I sometimes run the output from the Sherman into an Ibanez tube screamer distortion stomp box, and it gets even dirtier. I'm sick like that though.....I LOVE grimy beats....

The other "trick" I came up with is to run the Sherman's output on one mixer channel (it's mono) and then run the original signal alongside it at a higher volume, with the Sherman set to just MANGLE sound. I leave the Sherman's level really low and it just adds the greatest grit. Kinda like a really dusty record combined with distortion and envelope followers on each filter channel. Anyway, if any of you see a Sherman for cheap on Ebay or something (not TOO likely), and you like REAL grit to your beats, definitely cop one. I have the version two Sherman, and it's a lot more versatile than the version 1, but the version 1 has a fairly different sound, so they're both great. The next thing I really want to add to the rig is a Nord Modular. I might have to sell off some of my lesser used gear to do it, but I want some modular synthesis, even if it IS virtual, and I've always been partial to the kind of "half digital, half analog" sound of the Clavia filters. I suppose on the modular I could take that a lot of steps further, too......anything on your "wish list" for gear that you might be picking up soon? I always like to hear real user reviews of ish instead of the magazine reviews where basically every product they review is "amazing" and "revolutionary".... :-)

Peace,

i'm with you on that one MANiK. I have two sherman's in my lab :P

Have you ever used that link socket on the back to link them together for the giant filtration? If I had two, I would totally do this....end up with some monster filter. PLUS....as I'm sure you've noticed, the analog sound and EXCELLENT filters in this box are good for making basslines, too....

oh i agree.. probably as versital with shaping sounds as the mpc is for sequencing.. and the sherman can even be used for some of that too

anyway.. i always have them linked.. there is always something new to discover with this unit. extreemly powerfull sounds that are ALIVE!!! i liked my sherman so much i offed to be a rep for them here in Canada. i'm not only the fiend.. i'm also the dealer :P

pretty soon i'll be picking up a TC M-One XL for some basic effect and reverb to really utalize my sherman's for synthesis. still looking at other units but TC seems to have the best algorhythems.

nice to see there are other sherman abusers out there..

Just out of curiosity, do you move a lot of the Filterbanks? They seem to be relatively rare and unknown in my experience......though everyone that sees it in my rack is like "whoa....what is THAT?"

I think it helps that it's got like a zillion knobs and switches on it. People are always impressed by the design. I'm amazed at the build quality as WELL as the sound quality. These things really ARE like little tanks. I swear you could drop it off the roof and have it still work fine...

LOL very true my friend but the fact remains that people nowadays do not recognize the advantages of analog processing anymore... software has reduced the audience of the filterbank to a limited niche market of collectors.

i've sold a few filterbanks but not awhold lot.. when you look at the price of the filterbank compared to other more essential equipment like preamps or the software plugins available.. not too many are takers for something that is intended to completely rip apart and destroy audio

although it is a great tool with so many possibilities i'm afraid there are only a few out there who will see it's true value. you have yourself a very nostalgic and rare instrument.. use it wisely..

p.s just look at the FB1 and the QMF almost impossible to find now..

Im totally into the analog processing of beats. I use a sequential circuits pro one filter to mangle beats and also a frostwave resonator (ms20 clone filter. http://www.frostwave.com.

Although ive been wanting to buy the v2 of the filterbank for some time now....... Great peice of kit.[/url]

I been wantin some Analog Filters... I might see if I can pick up one of these...

I know they're rare, but does anyone know if the Version 2 Filterbank is as good... I mean does it still use Analog Circuitry or Digital cr@p that simulates Analog Circuitry...

Nope....all the filterbanks that Sherman's released have been 100% true analog. No patch memory, no DSP, no digital anything. And they DO tear sound apart. I took a really clean old organ part off a 78 the other day for one of my beats, and I ran it through the filterbank with a ton of resonance, and left it in envelope follower mode, and it made it sound more like electric guitar than an organ. Perfect for the beat. You should SERIOUSLY consider one of these. They are rather pricey, but you get what you pay for in this case....

Cool the Version 2 sounds like it'd be more realistic... Maybe I'll check this thing out... Do you know if you can still link 2 of them together... This sounds like it would be awesome...
