questions about jjos..

i just got finished going throught the AKAI 2500 manual. i was aware of a third party os but thought the jjos comparison chart would make more sense after getting to know standard akai os. and it did i still have some questions though.

is stan steezes jjos manual applicable to jjos on the 2500 it seems to be written for the 1000?

what vesion of os2xl is jj upto now?

from what i can gather jjos2 might suit me better, is it still safe to use? in the faq it gives a link to old jjos's but says use at own risk.

i dont actually own a 2500 yet at first i was going to get a 2000xl coz i remember seeing them when i was a kid and have a number of vintage synths which i love and thought what the hell all my other kit is from the old millenium why should the mpc i use to control and sample them be any different. but after trawling through both 2000xl and 2500manuals iv set on the 2500.

only reservations on this are it says that there is no filter modulation with input through

in input through mode you cannot record the moving of Q link sliders in the sequence

using the mpc to control synths via midi then effecting their output with sequenced filters and effects using the mpc's input thru is a very big part of what i intend using the mpc for.

are these capabilities added in any of jj's os's
also are there any other educational recourses other than stan steezes for 2500 jjos?

get the latest version from JJ's site, the old versions are just that: old versions.

JJ provides manuals on his site, but they're not always very clearly written, they're written by someone who doesn't speak english as a first language

yeah i allready looked through the explanations on jj's site can be quite difficult to understand the meaning of some of it. stan steezes jj manual is v good but is written for mpc 1000 and is getting to be quite out of date by now .

not sure if newest is allways better. in jjos2 you can record data from both sliders simultaneously to sequence in xl your effectively limited to one.

in os2 you lose one of your lowpass filters this dosent bother me but my point is that when new editions add features like arpegiator and remove old capabilities the feature set changes as oposed to being just added to.

i know that people who have being updating as the versions come out can just restart the mp with an old os if the feature set in an update is missing something they need. would you be able to do this if you bought jjosxl today?

yep, that's true.

but from what I understand JJOS on the 2500 is pretty similar to on the 1000, that doesn't help with the fact it's out of date though

right, but you're comparing OS2 to OS-XL ... that's not what the old versions is!

the old versions contains multiple old versions of each OS, it's not just OS2. i.e. it has v1.11 and v1.12 and v1.13 and ... etc etc

you can still get the latest OS2 direct from JJ:

you don't need to download the old versions unless there's a bug in the latest which is a problem for you.
generally the latest version will have more features and fewer bugs, the zip file of old versions is provided for those who want it, but as it says, use at your own risk.

you can switch between OS2 and OS-XL pretty easily, or if you need to you could switch from OS-XL 1.30 to OS-XL 1.29 ... but those are two different things you'd do for different reasons

Edit: when I refer to "old versions" above I mean the "JJ-OS Collection" linked to from the FAQ, which I think is what vito means too
