I just bought a maschine. I got it for a great price and I cant wait to use it. Perfect timing with the new update. The new features, sounds and drag and drop are sick.

There are some good videos of producers talking about Maschine and how they use it here.

Since emptysea seems to be the dude to ask. Here are some questions I have

Can you do 16 levels velocity and tuning with it?
Can you do mono, poly and note off with your sounds?
Can you set it to full level velocity or take it off to make the pads velocity sensitive? If so, is the velocity sensitivity pretty accurate?
Can you set the pads to mute groups so that they cut each other off?
Can you use a midi keyboard in conjunction with the maschine pads (for doing basslines and synths on keys)?
How is the swing on it?
How are the effects that come with it?

I love my MPC's, but I'm not gonna hate new technology either. I also use Ableton Live and have for years. It seems like Maschine had a lot of features that Ableton has been missing in drum rack. If Ableton changed drum rack to be exactly like an MPC, it would be a wrap!

It would be cool if he answered your questions directly although he refused to answer the questions I had about Maschine. I need to hear more about the specifics of Mashine. I don't need a sales pitch about why he feels it is superior to the MPC (especially since he is far from an MPC expert). What does Maschine do that would be useful and significant for producers of sample oriented music?

By the way...the You Tube videos of Maschine are BS and not useful at all. The got brand-name producers talking about it but giving no specifics....just a sales pitch.

Yes, you can in KEYBOARD/PAD mode.

nod records wrote:Can you do mono, poly and note off with your sounds?

Yes, you can set the polyphony and there are three types (ONESHOT, AHD, ADSR).

nod records wrote:Can you set it to full level velocity or take it off to make the pads velocity sensitive? If so, is the velocity sensitivity pretty accurate?

Yes, normally it's velocity sensitive. You can choose a velocity curve. And you can also select full velocity or set it to a value of your choice.

Yes, you can assign sounds to choke groups.

nod records wrote:Can you use a midi keyboard in conjunction with the maschine pads (for doing basslines and synths on keys)?

Yes, you can.

nod records wrote:How is the swing on it?

Different in settings, but that doesn't automatically mean you can't create the same swing as other sequencers. If I can get my hands on an MPC, I'll compare MIDI files.

Good, not outstanding.

OS 1.5 is now officially available. The "improvement" that caught my eye: "1.5 version also loads the programs of nearly all MPC models ever built, opening up a vast resource of existing sound and sample material within MASCHINE."

Program import from Akai MPC* 500/ 1000 /2000(XL)/ 2500/ 3000/ 4000 (*Akai name used by permission ??? ).

Does it have a tap or note repeat button?

Yes, there's a Note Repeat button that also functions as Tap Tempo button when the Shift button is held down.

nod records wrote:Can you tune a whole program or bank at once?

Maschine doesn't work with programs. You can tune sounds and groups.

nod records wrote:What are the quanitize setting (1/8 1/8t 1/16 1/16t 1/32 1/32t)?

I don't know all settings out of my head (I'm not at home right now), but you should be able to download the reference manual from the NI site. I'm sure you can find all settings in there.

Afaik a group (16 pads) is the same as a bank. Maschine has eight groups.

I remember from my S2000 that a program consists of keygroups. I'm not sure how these are converted. Maybe SaintJoe or Blue Haze can tell.

Looking at the manual, it seems to be limited when it comes to chopping samples. You can only chop into 4, 8, 16, or 32. However, it has an ADD and REMOVE slice function. What is the maximum number of slices can you add?

Askia Shaheed wrote:Its just terminology. NI states it can import MPC programs. What does it convert MPC programs to?
Q. A program on an MPC is ________ on Maschine?
A. Group?

Or is groups similar to the MPCs pad banks?

you got it right there, the separate groups are similar to pad banks, specifically when opening mpc programs. If you load a program you can either load one bank or all, if you have 4 banks, each bank will load into one group A - D

They also got akai keygroup import working finally (worked with them a bunch back and forth to get that one working lol) At first you couldn't load instruments and keygroups from things like the 4k, 5k, or the rack samplers.

Now you can load them and they will not load like individual mpc programs but as a Maschine "sound" so they load to one pad but it's a multisample which is spread across the keys/pads ready to play. You can have 16 "sounds" in a group, a sound can be a single drum/sample or a multisampled instrument.

MPC import and AKAI keygroup import are some of my favorite features because you're not limited to only NI instruments, you could always import samples but setting up multisamples in there isn't the best. Now I can use Kontakt to create multi samples and convert those files (with a sample converter) into AKAI and open.

I'm not quite sure why we can't open Kontakt instruments yet  , I'm hoping they add that function in the near future
