question about audio interfaces and multi-tracking

what should i be looking for term wise or wording if i want to find out if an interface has the ability to multi-track into my DAW.. i currently have and Audiogram 6 which is 6/2 analog i/o's but it doesn't multi-track separate channels simultaneously into my DAW. im also trying to stay away from DIGI racks and Pro Tools..

does the amount of OUTS matter, can a usb interface still multi-track if it only has 2 physical OUTS but 8 Ins..

yea and looking around i noticed quite the price jump from usb to firewire..

Buy the soundcard that i have M-Audio Delta 1010 it has 10 ins and 10 outs.

Are you sure you're not thinking of USB 1.1 which is shit, but very old now?

i was looking at that but thinking of going another route since it doesn't have any XLR inputs and phantom power.. and im trying to stay away from having to buy a mixer and a sound card/interface..

reading that link to m-audio seems like usb 2.0 is just as a capable (if not more) as firewire 400 connection. it also mentions something about multi-tracking..

You got Firewire, 12 full channels, XLRs with pre-amp and it ALSO works as an analog mixer.

It goes up to 48K/24bit and the new drivers (I burned them to cd) are hassle-free.

That's it, should't be your thing, just have enough luck to find what it fits you soon, and have fun with that!

just won a firewire 800 pci card with both 800/400 ports.. for 99 cents on ebay..

was looking at the Mackie ONYX 1220i but apparently it doesn't multitrack it only sends a stereo out. i could be mistaken ill have to read more into it.. but the NRV10 is looking real nice..

I was going to say something against you not wanting to go with the 1010, but now I see and have to agree with your decision.

Not a bad choice, but if you have to install a fw card, then that must mean your machine is pretty old by todays standards.

what is your budget? how many xlrs do you need? do you need a physical surface with faders (aka a mixer)?

look at the new yamaha n8 or n12 - these are "real" mixers which can send all ins simultainiously to the daw.

other than these there are for instance motu or rme firewire interfaces form 8 to 20 ins that can record all at one time.

Nah, usb does have simultaneous/multichannel recording capabilities, plenty of informative resources out there that will tell you that.
