are there any good VST's for chopping anyone can suggest?

can anybody suggest a good (hopefully free) VST for chopping samples? preferably with the ability to do equal slices?
when i'm not by my mpc, i've been trying to do produuction on my laptop with reaper. the chopping aspect of most plugins i've found seem clunky workflow wise. i've looked around a bunch, but have not come up with anything that worked well for chopping up stuff.


so far i've looked at a good deal of plugins, including:

morgana (doesn't allow slicing waves that don't have slice information already in them)
poise (mostly for drums, not so much for chopping from what i've seen)
haxxor (the interface was tiny, and not comfortable to use at all, only 12 slices as well)
halion (ehh)
phatmatik pro (haven't tried this yet, so don't know how this is)
guru (???)

shortcircuit seems to be byfar the best i've found, but it does not do equal slices and sometimes slicing stuff up in that gets a bit tedious.

any other suggestions you guys got would be appreciated.

Slicex?

word. i just gave slicex a try. for me it wasn't really that enjoyable to use messing around with it. i'm sure it has its strong points if i dug into it a bit deeper, but its still not coming close to shortcircuit. i'm surprised there's nothing out there plugin wise, with a decent workflow that has equal zoning chops, as well as user defined chops. shortcircuit is the best thing i've found so far, i'm just surprised nothing comes close to it in this aspect.

and thanks for the reaper link. i use reaper all day long, so i got my workflow down as far as chopping and mangling samples in reaper. but for breaks and samples i just prefer doing all my chopping in a plugin so i can tweak stuff later, rather than chopping in reaper and then rendering out my chops to use.

You're welcome. I've heard of this Shortcircuit. It supposed to be like Kontakt, but free. I don't really know about VST samplers anymore. I don't have to worry about that since I got Ableton Live lol!

yeah, shortcircuit is dope! back when i used to use ableton, i found shortcircuit and fell in love with it. i've been using it ever since then. the amount of stuff you can do with it is amazing. kills every other sampler plugin i've used. its definitely worth checking out, especially since its free...

so just out of curiostiy, in ableton are you chopping the files in the track view and then loading them into ableton's built in sampler, simpler? or are you just laying the chops out in the track view?

Yeah, I chop it in the audio track. If I want to play it out, I use the Drum Rack, which they added in Live 7. If I don't need to play it out, I just copy and paste.

If you are serious and can't find a good free plug-in, raise the stakes a little and help support the software developers.

did he asked for free stuff? Read the first post. He already checked the features of payware like morgana, halion and stuff but didn't find the right tool.
Strange that he find the free (since there is no further development) shortcircuit the best tool atm.

I think Cleas (programmer of shortcircuit) could really get richer if he decide to develop his great sampler VST just a bit more but he said that this won't happen.

dude, are you serious? who the hell said i only wanted free plugins? i listed a rack of pay plugins that i've tried the demos of and didn't like. pAL suggested slicex (a pay plugin) and i didn't shoot it down cause it was a pay plugin. it just wasn't for me. so far i haven't found anything pay or free that really grabs me, thats why i was asking for people's opinions/suggestions.

but ok, you want to assume i haven't invested in making music and i only want free stuff. you tell me i should think about "BUYING SOMETHING THAT DOES EXACTLY WHAT I NEED." ok, bro that's cool. i'll take your advice and i'll try the plugin you suggested, which was.....

i definitely agree with you, Claes would make a good amount of money if he updated shortcircuit and developed it more. its crazy how much it can do already. I think development stopped because he was working on shortcircuit 2 and realized the direction he went with it was not right for some reason (i can't remember but i think he changed its internal structure or something along those lines). apparently going back and redoing it was not an option he could/would do. thats when he made shortcircuit free, including version 2 which is only like %40 done. amazing that he made it free.

i know he's been working with some former ableton development guys on a project called bitwig, but i don't know what it does. you can check it here... http://bitwig.com/
