if you need to buy an interface i think the protools route is hard to beat. mbox2 mini under 300 bucks... that gives you stereo ins and outs, plus full on protools le. beware your waves stuff might not work with it...they're notorious for requiring upgrades to move up the protools chain... ie if it worked in 6 or 7 in might not work in 8. in fact, just having them on your computer might make protools crash even if you aren't using them.


I appreciate the information my dude. I am actually in the market for a small interface so that is perfect! I just wish it was Firewire instead of USB.

i never said that because you dont have pro tools you didnt know anything. i said there is no pro tools demo, and since you are looking for a demo you most likely dont own any hardware to run pro tools. if you owned any digi hardware you would understand this already and wouldnt be looking around for a demo of pro tools.. to be honest... your line of questioning leads me to believe you dont know anything. you asked what the difference between mono & stereo is..

and btw fruity loops/FL studio is a DAW. i said to use it because FL is so easy, any body can D/L it, load a wav and start highlighting steps in the sequencer..

also Pro Tools doesn't use vst format, they use RTAS..

why firewire? no difference in sound over usb, and with two simultaneous tracks you can get your latency plenty low over usb. it starts to matter when you're talkin running a bunch of tracks in at once.

another protools issue to consider - you need to run your sessions off a separate drive from where the program itself is loaded. ie you have your main hd for your computer with your os and every other program you run, and then a separate one for the audio tracks. if you have an external for this it is supposed to be a firewire drive, and digi also recommends you run the drive and the interface on separate busses - no daisy-chaining. (that's just what they say - my production partner uses a usb drive has no problems)

i personally run the mbox 2 pro which is a firewire interface but will run you more like 500 for the setup. it is sweet though - 6 ins and 8 outs (plus two sets of outs for channels 1/2). I have my mpc and turntables on the ins, and then the main outs go to my monitors and back into my mpc. so sampling out of the computer is effing easy.

also, i think, and you'll wanna check up on this, that when you don't need to buy a separate waves bundle for rtas (protools plugin format)

When did I say I didn't know the difference between Stereo and Mono? That is basic info that I know, I just don't know a lot about DAW's. Seeing as how I'm also most likely journeying into the world of Maschine I need to know a good DAW to go along with it.

Start with Maschine standalone and then proceed with Maschine VST in FL since you know how to operate FL.

Thot you meant this thread. I do know FL fairly well but would personally rather learn on a more professional setup so I can have time to gain knowledge about it rather than waste all my time diving into FL and then realizing how uncapable it is.

Honestly I don't even know the basics with Ableton. I find the layout to just have so much going on I don't know where to start my project.

A new DAW can be overwhelming. I'd search YouTube for beginner tutorials.

Very much overwhelming. I use SoundForge and Sony Vegas though and when I saw videos for Pro Tools the format looked very familiar to the setup with Sony. Obviously not everything is the same but the whole layout looked sort of similiar.

ableton has some pretty good built in tutorials to get you started. it looks confusing at first but these really help. just spend even a couple hours on these and you'll be good. honestly though the sky's the limit with what you have right now.

if you need an interface i would go the protools route. the user interface is SO easy. just the edit view for looking at your waveforms, and the mix view for your levels and plugins.

if you already have an interface though you can do amazing things with the mpc and ableton. you're really only limited by what's in your head at this point.

I'm going to sell my MPC1000, get Maschine and a mbox mini with pro tools. I am either going to get an ASR10 or just a midi keyboard after that. I just watched a bunch of tutorial videos on pro tools and i can just tell im going to mesh well with it.

Sony Vegas is video editing software..
