Hey yall, I found a bug in the 3.10 OS.

If you take a copy of a sample into temp, and then delete an existing sample to have no info (start, stop and length all being 000.000.00) then you try to paste the sample into it with the Zone start or end (depending on which you use) is set at 000.100.00 on the sample with no information, the 60 will try to paste it in forever, I left in on for a while but It may eventually work, but I think it is just stuck in a loop and the only solution is to switch it off, losing anything you didn't save.

Not something that will come up much, but I noticed it. usually when you switch to a new sample to paste the zone start and end will be set at the end of the existing sample data, if you delete the sample entirely, the zone settings don't reset, so they are addressing a point in the data that nolonger exists.

I'll have to see if you can paste into an empty sample with the zone settings corrected to zero.

How much are you willing to bet that a bunch of cats are going to try this out to see if it's true?

Ha ha ha, sheep.

I doubt it, but they are welcome to do it, I'd like to be wrong about it.

You're welcome to try too ;)

Ha ha ha, naw it's alright, I trust in your status as the MPC 60 guru of this board.

MPC3000 and MPC3000LE can school me on many aspects!

Schools in ... I will try this on the MPC3000 also.

Rohan.

I love my tech head bretheren!!

If you don't mind Rohan, Can you confirm something on the 3000?

If you use the pads to control an external unit, track set to drum, local off, with sounds loaded into the 3000, when the sequence that you tap in loops, do the internal sounds trigger as well until you change the track to Midi? Also, try note repeat in the same mode, but push hard on the pad as some external units can trigger at low velocities, is the internal sound note repeated as well as the external synth?

Thanks.

First ... the BUG you experienced above ... No such error on the MPC3000.
No matter how hard I tried.
Memory, zone, soft start, soft end and snd in memory are locked together very well. No such haulting or freeze requiring a re-boot. All OK...

Now the next bit.

>I love my tech head bretheren!!

Cool ... They respect you too :-)

>If you don't mind Rohan, Can you confirm something on the 3000?

Not a problem ... ( and this is the same for the MPC60/MPC60MK2 also ).

>If you use the pads to control an external unit, track set to drum, local
>off, with sounds loaded into the 3000, when the sequence that you tap in >loops, do the internal sounds trigger as well until you change the track to >Midi?

Yes ...

DRUMS for INTERNAL drum tracks and loaded samples.

So when the MAIN screen track selected is in DRUM mode:

1: The output of the track plays to the internal drum sound generator
2: You can record drum notes into the track using the front panel pads.
3: In the sequence editing screens, note events in drum tracks are visually identified and selected not by note number only as in MIDI tracks, but also by the pad number and sound name currently assigned to the displayed note number.
4: Drum tracks are not affected by the TRANSPOSE function.

MIDI for EXTERNAL devices.

So when the MAIN screen track selected is in MIDI mode:

Exactly as it reads...

Tracks playing external MIDI devices should be set as such.

All input will be via the MIDI keyboard.

>Also, try note repeat in the same mode, but push hard on the pad as >some external units can trigger at low velocities, is the internal sound >note repeated as well as the external synth?

When a track in the MAIN screen is set to DRUM mode then ... YES ...

Reason behind this. It would be daft to have a track in DRUM mode and "local" for the pads set to "off" only to find that pressing the NOTE REPEAT button caused you to hear nothing.

Said NOTE REPEAT button drives a separate internal task that sends messages to the sound processor to "play a sound" ... regardless of the LOCAL "ON/OFF" status when a MAIN screen track is in DRUM mode.

Think of the NOTE REPEAT button in this regard as a remote rapid fire button with it's repeat rate locked to the current quantize setting.

This is NOT the case when the track is in MIDI mode where any events to repeat are derived via the MIDI port and not the MPC front panel.

So with that in mind.

When a track in the MAIN screen is set to MIDI mode then ... NO ...

NOTE REPEAT is via MIDI in this regard and not the front panel.

Cool ?

Rohan.

AS I suspected, it's a problem with the porting of the 3000 OS. THose extra clock cycles must help some.

As for the other behaviour, so to use the pads to control and external midi device, the track has to be on drum, correct? So after you use the pads to lay a track, you have to change it to 'midi' to get it to only trigger the external device. And whan using the pads to program note repeats for the external device, you just have to put up with the internal sounds triggering until you switch the track to midi. Not so elegant, but I figure they must have thought people would use a midi controller or just not have samples in the 60 when controlling other gear.

As you pointed out, when using an external midi controller, everything functions as it should.

It is my understanding that the 2000 does not behave in this way, but I have been unable to confirm this.

I still love my nasty 12 bit machine, I'm glad you checked my findings on the 3000. Maybe we need 60 heads with the new OS to try the same thing just to make sure it isn't just my machine, although I doubt that very highly.

OK, I forgot a key detail, when the track is in drum mode but has a midi channel selected is when you can control external modules from the pads, the idea is to use the pads as a midi controller for the modules, you probably got that, but I was vague on that point.

elmacacao.. you just answered a question I posted a few days ago.. cheers! it was about controlling an external sampler with the pads.

but still having trouble with the syquest on the eps16.. it formatted but the bugger couldn't save anything.. anyhow, waiting on my second zip drive for the eps..

By elmacaco Tue Aug 31, 2004 8:02 pm
I didn't see your question Anon, are you using a 3.10 60 or a 3k?

yeah it's a little weird, but I'm used to it now, I mostly use my keys with it and it works flawless, but I use the pads on occasion.

By anon_twist Tue Aug 31, 2004 9:09 pm
using a 3.10 60. yah, it must be a bit awkward.. I suppose it's a bit of a luxury to be able to trigger with the pads, I just don't like banging the keys too much...

I gotta try those program settings when I get home...

By elmacaco Tue Aug 31, 2004 9:10 pm
The MPC editor format worked!!!

Thanks Anon!!

By anon_twist Tue Aug 31, 2004 9:18 pm
of course it did you big dummy!

now compare how fast things load when you save as 16bit vs 12 bit.. have yet to try it myself but I got 4 more hrs in the sweatshop here...
