Got my Mackie Onyx finally! Was wondering though...

Hey people, I finally got hold of a Mackie Onyx 1220 which is ill. I primarily bought it so that I could run the 8 outs of my spanking S950 into it and then EQ, mix down etc.

I know that I can use the Firewire port into a DAW to get a dry mix, which is pretty dope, but I think I want to use the EQs before recording into a DAW, that's if I even decide to record to a DAW. My other option is a multitrack recorder but I dunno yet. Hmmm.

I'm thinking the best way that I could do this would be to get a nice sounding mix from the board, then record it track by track into the DAW, my question is however, how would I go about getting the tracks to all be in sync each time I did it?

Surely I would run MIDI from my MPC2000 (Which sends MIDI data into my S950) into the soundcard of my choice, which would be synced up to a DAW... Hmm, I'm tired and a little confused, can anyone help me out haha?

Oh and again, I'm unsure of which soundcard/interface to cop... I read about the MBox and Ho-Tools as Lamp, I think, puts it but maybe it's just hype. Any ideas?

eq does not go to firewire on the onyx.

you should have done some research first.

I did do my research and I know that the EQ is bypassed when you track the beat using Firewire, hence why I wrote

What I actually wanted to know was about interfaces and the different ways of tracking whilst making uses of the EQ on board the mixer but since you misread my post, it doesn't really matter man.

I don't know the ONYX boards too well, but here's a thought~

Can you use the sends to route a couple EQ'd channels to the inputs of a couple unused channels and then have those be picked up through the FW?

Maybe you can get away with pre-rec EQ on only a couple channels? Really, EQing a clean recorded signal in the box is a pretty safe bet, but this might be a reasonable work around if you really like the flavor of the Mackie EQ.

What I really want to do is purely mix everything using the Mackie board, then track that, most probably one by one into a PC, but I'm a little bit unsure as of how to do that.

Maybe if I explained how my setup works...

Turntable -> DJ Mixer -> S950 (Sequenced with the 2000) -> Mackie Onyx -> PC/multitrack recorder

So I'mma get mixes from my S950 done using the Mackie then I'mma record it, track by track into a DAW. The thing is, how will I be able to get it all to sync up when I've tracked every element of the beat in? I was thinking via MIDI, so I'mma need a soundcard with MIDI so I can use MTC and all that shiz... Just not sure about what soundcard I will need and which machine I need to send the MIDI from... The S950 MIDI out or the MPC's MIDI out?!?!?!?!!?! LOL

I had a 1640 way back and had it modded to put the eq in the sig path of the firewire you can get it done here.

well worth the 200 bucks or so as the eqs sound so nice.

also you can just get a usb to midi interface such as the yamaha ux16 for like 30 bucks since you already have the mackie.

Didn't they change that on the new Onyx units with the built in FW?

Actually I knew they changed it I said it to help others who may be considering going the Onyx route.
The 2 biggest changes with the Onyx i-series ( there are also some smaller changes ) is the ability to use it with PT mPowered 8 and the new FW routing that allows for pre/post EQ routing.

With the new features, the FW now being standard and the introductory rebate going with the older Onyx especially with plans of using the FW for a DAW may not be the best choice for some people.

I give Mackie credit they addressed some major concerns with the i-series.
-Why can't I route the EQ to the FW?
-Why is the FW optional and so expensive?
-What the FW can't be used with Pro Tools?

Anyway holler back at this thread and let us know how you make out with the suggestions it could be helpful to others.

Yeah there is, not sure which mixer it is, but damn, the signal gets soaked

No but seriously, I was looking at a Allen & Heath Zedr16, firewire mixer w/ 16 preamps, 24 channels total. Is it work the 1700, or can a Mackie provide the same results and save me 500 bucks.
