Look what i just bought... (hope it was worth it)!

Bought about 2000 records from an online auction for 800 bucks.

Here's a translation of the auctions description:

Condition from excellent to bad, but mostly good!

I bought a record collection from an online auction before. It was a soul/funk collection from a guy who collected them over a time of 20 years and i was very happy with the purchase. I guess this one was a "shot in the dark" tho... wish me luck there's not too much garbage in there...

WOW, goodluck they look like fillers to me,but who knows maybe they dont know about records, where this guy from ,looks like my friends house,he usually ahs garage sales with stuff like that. he's opening a part to the store this coming month, after 3yrs of opening it.
anyways theres some good records that i seen in some of those pix hope you can sell what you dont use or just donate them to goodwill.

I'm from switzerland, where record stores sell records for 20-30$ (if it's a good one). The best place to buy are record fares and online auctions, otherwise it's simply too expensive. I still visit record stores to dig, but i don't buy there very often... except if i'm looking for a certain record.

It's not such a problem if there's mostly bad stuff tho, i'll pick out a few that i want to keep, and sell the whole lot again on the same auction site. Maybe i'll lose a little money, but it won't be much. I still hope at least half of the records will be cool... gotta think positive... haha!

how are you getting them pick up or they shipping them to you?

I dont know, to me that looks like maybe 1000 or so records in that pic.. still a good grab though.

It's funny, the guy who sold them lives only a few miles from here. I'll pick them up with my car. Shipping would be risky (and expensive).

I took a closer look and compared the ammount to my own records. I have about 400 records in my collection. I could fill pretty much exactly four crates with that. On the picture there's about 20 crates, some not 100% filled, so let's say it's just 16 full crates. If my 400 records take up four crates, 16 crates would be about 1600 records.

But anyway, it's still just guessing. I'll count them once i've picked them up!

Depending on what you want to do with it, determines if you've got guns, or butter. If your beatmaking, I'd rethink the purchase. If your plan is to jam clubs hits it might be worth it. But for me, if I see a record pile with Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" as one of the highlights, I'd pass.

For me, it just brings up the question of where the hell would I put all of those things! My collection is up to around 400 records (Just guessing, I've got @4 full crates worth), and I'm to the point where I really need to start swaping some of them. I really need to go through and pick out a large chunk that I feel I can do without. I love to buy records, but I find myself not doing it as much simply because I don't have the space to store them.
Personally, I would never buy a collection of records (At least not a large one) even if I had the space. I just like building a collection myself. That's a huge part of the fun for me. That doesn't mean I won't take pointers or donations. I just like to know where I got each record. I imagine if I got a collecton like that, I'd have to dig through it like I was in a record store. Unless it's an amazing collection, I would feel lucky to find two or three out of ten that I would really want. Just my thoughts... Good luck though my man, and let us know of any jewels you come across!

Moving the records from the car to my apartment was quite heavy work indeed. After half an hour i got so fed up, i simply "hired" two random guys from the street and gave them 20 bucks to do the rest, haha!

For the last four hours i quickly went through the records and counted them. I kept it simple, everything counts as one... maxis, lp's, double lp's, box sets, etc. There are 2'039 records...

A quick guess...

30% is probably usesless (classic music, folklore music, etc). The rest is a variety of pop, rock, jazz, soul, funk, about 50-100 movie sountracks... Many many many decent records, pretty much all of them in great condition.

Joan Armatrading, Anita Baker, Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire, Peter Brown, Ramsey Lewis, Shirley Bassy, Randy Crawford... There's lots of gems! It was already worth the money when just couting all the soul and funk records...

I seperated the clearly good stuff from the garbage and ended up with 450 records (pop, rock, jazz, funk, soul, movie soundtracks).

I have another 500 that look like they could be something good, but i've never heard of the artists before... will have to go through those again and check them all out...

I didn't feel like taking pictures of all the 450 decent records, but here's a few picks:















PS: There's no pics from the pop/rock records (got tired of taking pics ), but there's quite a lot... tracy chapman, eric clapton, styx. madness, boston, billy joel, bob dylan, stones, eagles, madonna, kiss, dire straits, prince, etc.
