if you just sample from one record fine...(ish), but if you mean u sample just off one track then the jobs are all done for you, cos the tracks already in the same key, time etc... skills are in tuning filtering stretching... ... ... digging.
cant say i dont do it as well tho, im no hypocrite, but also i'm not up for getting sued

no, it violates copyrights and is illegal no matter how long or short of a sample you use. you samepl (steal) 1.2seconds of a kick drum and it is copyright violation.

now, can anyone really tell for sure where you got that kick, no.

especially not once its layered, compressed and processed.

take a break, and slice it up and make a new beat, can anyone tell the source for sure, maybe, but it is really hard.

sample 8 seconds of a popular bassline and loop it and you are in for trouble in the long run if you release that track commercially and it gets any kind of attention.

Ha, i've totally done that. When I first started making beats, I was pretty lazy on my drums, so its cool to go back to what was just an OK beat, and bring it up to date with what I know now.

If you got friends who are also making beats on an mp, one thing we've done is give everyone a copy of the same disk, and have everyone make their own beat and see how different people use the same samples - its interesting sometimes.

Ya'll on here talking about getting sued don't need to worry...You will only get sued if that song is making you SERIOUS money, belee dat. And if it gets to that point, you WILL have the scrill to pay for it, trust me. There are SO many people making beats now-a-days, there are no sample police running around listening to all the underground records being made...who is gonna pay someone to do that?

If your song that you have a famous sample in, makes it to the radio all over the country --- then you need to start being careful (if you didnt get permission to use it). But if you have made it that far, then capital to pay for the lawsuit will NOT be hard to raise. People who get sampled from will only care if they think you are making money off of their original material. I would sample whatever the heck you want and have FUN doing it. You can also learn a lot this way.

Plus, I don't think it costs much, if you plan on blowing up off that song or something, to pay royalties BEFORE HAND to the artist you are sampling from. (and if they are no longer alive, pay immediate family members, etc., etc.) Paying royalties and getting the sample cleared (if you plan on going BIGTIME and making livable income off your music) will be cheaper than the lawsuit. But in any case, this really only applies to beatmakers who plan on making a living off of their beats and want to get heard on a "worldwide" level.

I don't recommend being a Puff Daddy in the game because what's been done before won't necessarily be successful again, nor is it very creative. But at the same time, I do not worry about blowing up, I just like making tracks that sound nice, for fun...regardless of what happens to them afterward. I try not to sample from famous stuff...but sometimes you hear something and you just wonder what it would sound like looped up with some bangin a** drums behind it...Feel me?

i feel that the MPC urges its user to bring many differing sources together for one united cause [not all from the same record]. on one hand, i like to sample records i enjoy. but sometimes i'm in crates pulling out records i cant stand and just scanning for a certain sound...

it all depends on what your looking to create. Sometimes if I want to make some dark, gloomy type opf track with an orchestral flow to it, a jazz record isn't gonna help me at all. All records are good to sample from, but it's all in what your looking for. As long as you already know what you have in mind, it's helps out a whole lot, because without thinking, your just gonna pick up a bunch of wax, and try to create soemthing from nothing. But if you do think, and lets say you want a track with some nice chior boy church vocals in the background, anything except a record that fits that criteria with have you digging for a loonnng time.

i think you all right,but i also think if you know your music and have an aresonal of music to digg threw you should not have that problem,

maybe i'm not digging right or maybe i dont know how to sample,but i have 50 milk crates of records ,of all kinds of music jazz, funk,soul, rock,modern rock,hiphop, techno ,house,oldies,classical, spanish, kids records and i havent ran into that problem,

but this is my opinion,you have to do what you have to do to survive in this game...peace
