Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

elmacaco wrote:The argument that you should stop sampling to be original and equating it to sampling current hip hop to make current hip hop is bull. The difference is in what you bring to hip hop. If you are in it for a quick smash and grab admit it, then it is clear what you are doing and people can think what they want, but to put Kanye in the pantheon of greats when he just steals **** from current producers is stupid. The difference is your track and steely Dan's track are gonna be mils apart, in different genres and timeframes, but sampling Timbaland to make a RnB or Hip hop joint is Incest, Biting and wrong. I'm not making up the rules, as you see there are many who feel the same way independant of what I have said.

First off, I never said I would sample Timberland. He obviously uses the same kicks in many songs, so sampling his kicks and snares straight off would be biting yes!! My point was, where did Timberland get the drums to begin with? Would he be wack if he told you back in the days he sampled a kick from a Gangstarr record and created some of his kits off of it? Would it really matter. I dont really care what Kanye did. I'm not gonna judge him..He, not exclusively, did bring back sampling. For little while, underground and mainstream cats frowned on sampling, trying hard to make keyboard hiphop tracks or tracks with very minimal sampling. When Kanye shined on that "Blueprint" album, how many people cared what he sampled for kicks????

elmacaco wrote:you got a job for me Jigginz ? ;)

Sampling is not biting, it is not the same. Originality is not the point either, you can sample never before heard music and be unoriginal, and you can sample well known tuff and be original, that's not the point at all.

It's also not about purism vs. new school or whatever you want to call it. It's not about who can tell what you did or where you got what, it is about your actions and how you apply your craft. I would sample all your soundclick beats for snares and samples, but I know I can do better on my own, I don't need to stand on your shoulders. If I sample new hip hop to make new hip hop, guess what? It just got old. It is repatition ad nausium.

How can you say sampling is not biting, but sampling a kick from a new song is? Then say "Originality is not the point," but "you can sample well known stuff and be original." This is a$$ backwards man...If you feel to sample some obsure kick, fine. If you feel, like sampling a kick off of an old tribe record would that be alright, cause they havent made an album in years? The biting that we should be discussing is, using the same sample as the next man the month after you heard it on BET and not being creative with it. If sampling a kick is wrong then sampling in general should be wrong.

elmacaco wrote:It is about your input, if you have no scruples, then that will come across, and sampling a kick or snare from a modern album speaks to the disrespect to the craft that is prevailant among the get rich quick kids, who will most likely not get rich but they will get nowhere fast.

If this is true, then Pete Rock, Marley Marl, and the Beat Miners all disrespected the craft. Call them get rich kids. I feel like I'm being very clear in disguishing the these cats, to the cat that produced a song like Tipsy. But I dont think you're getting it. Sampling is eventually biting from someone else, but it can be done in a way that its considered art.

I am one of these underground cats from back in the days. Songs that me and my partner put out back in the day, didnt have the best sound, because we didnt have compressors, pc compression software, or sound modules..All we had was an EPS16. And we did alright. We sampled kicks from old records and some from the music that was out at the time. Did our peers look at us like we were wack because we did this, hell no. We were original. That's all cats cared about and they like us because our music was different to the other underground shit that was out at the time. I'm talking back in 95 and 96..Biting a straight sample that someone else used was frowned upon not a fvcking kick. Cats liked our music, and if they didnt, it wasn't because, the kick was from the latest song that was out. If you feel that strong about not sampling from a new song, that's fine with me. But doing that does not make you less of an artist. Nor does it mean that you have nothing to offer to the progression of hiphop music because of were you get your kicks from.

I was blessed that my moms and my partner's parents had a lot of music in the crib that we could draw from. But we take for granted that we can go record shopping. Or that we have the ablility to sample from a dvd or vhs of a movie to sample drums and tweak them. Some 15 year old cat cat that maylove hip hop music, but they dont have funk records in the crib, or any records at all. All they have is a Boss 303, with a cassette deck. What if this cat records a LIL Jon track on his cassette and samples parts of it to make a couple of tracks, and the sh!t sound hot.. You gonna tell this boy he's breaking some code, cause he didn't dig deep enough? You gonna preach ethics to him. He sampled and you sample. You cant sh!it on him for that. Sometimes cats have only what they can afford and they try to do the best with it. If All I had was a Boss303, and a LiL Jon record, I'll sample that sh!t hard and you'll never know it. I havent sampled anything from a current record in a long time because I have many resources, but if someone did it, and the track was hot, Im gonna tell them they wack??? Of course not!

BTW Dove, isnt it electric "light" orchestra? I dig like a muthafvcka too

there's a difference between sampling and stealing! kanye totally ripped whole melodies on at least 2 of the tracks (probably more, but i've only heard the originals with my own ears for 2). He also took drums from dre, but supposedly he tweaked those a bit. i have no respect for beat makers who take 1 good sounding bar from a classic song, speed it up, loop it, and add banging drums. doing that technically is ridiculously easy and morally *wrong*! i don't care if the samples were cleared, 99% of the people i know think he made those melodies and he's super talented. and the whole, "but it takes so long to find the perfect sample!" argument is BS, because all that takes is time, not much talent or skill.

sorry for the rant, just had to voice my opinion!

btw, if you wanna truly see how horrible kanye can be, download his awful queen "we are the champions" butcher job. wow, he managed to really screw up a great song :|

ok.. So someone beats up and rapes your girl.. You arrive at the scene just when he's finishing what he came to do, and shocked by what you see you beat up the guy so that he barely survives. The cops come over and you both go to jail. Now that you're both criminals would you really consider yourself to be on the same level as that guy?

I know I wouldn't!

Naw man, that's not what I'm saying at all. If two people decide to go out and commit crimes (one robs and kills and the other one molests children) they're both criminals. Only difference is that once they get to jail one becomes a bottom feeder while the other is at the top of the hierarchy. They're both criminals but the one who robs and steals looks down on the other one. I don't know where you got that girlfriend scenario but it was off base.

That' s why I like these kinds of threads, it gets the dialogue going.

AllHipHop.com: Jaheim’s new joint, produced by KayGee is a little too close to yours. Is there any code of the streets for producers with that?

Alchemist: Nah man, you can tell by how Trackmasters did the Beatnuts with that J. Lo s**t, they didn’t call up the Beatnuts or nothing. Amongst certain heads who I got respect for and who have a mutual respect for me, yeah sure there’s a code. I would never do something like that, because I think back to that era when biting was completely not tolerated. Nowadays, the word biting doesn’t exist anymore. Back in the day you had to be original, having your own style is what made you special. So as far as using other peoples loops and stuff, I try to steer away from it, or if I’m gona use it I’m gona twist it up and flip it into something they wouldn’t have thought of so even the originator would respect it.

AllHipHop.com: So you weren’t even a little bit pissed when you heard the Jaheim song?

Alchemist: Nah, it was just funny cause in the song he’s like “When worst comes to worst you gotta put your women first.” That makes me think they definitely had to hear my track.

AllHipHop.com: Look at you being all humble, like they couldn’t have heard that song.

Alchemist: It’s all good. It’s kind of funny cause Jaheim has a new artist and they just called up me and P (Prodigy) because they’re using “Keep it Thoro.” Now I’m starting to think, damn KayGee call me up. But it’s all love, we get our residuals and it’s all good.

I thought this was interesting as it relates to what we're talking about in this thread. Interesting to hear a professional producer's take (not just a bunch of kids who post beats on Soundclick and think they know best).

Check allhiphop.com for the full interview with Alchemist.

really, can somebody tell me why a producer has to follow some sort of code? hot shit is hot shit is hot shit...y'all cats that be hollering bout ethics and shit are full of it...this is hip hop, ethics is for politics and office space...why can't a man make a beat anyway he wants to? while y'all talk about culture, times are changing...this is not 1988 or whenever in the past, things have changed...i refuse to live in the past as far as production goes and people who say they are opposed to sampling from another producer, every song has a producer...u can use Kanye's drums or anybody else's all day long but it will still be your beat...face it, some people are gonna copy **** and some will be original...but this code of hip-hop is nonsense...everybody has different ideas about it and THAT IS MUSIC...music is not about what the man next to u is doing, its about what u are doing so screw the CODES OF HIP-HOP, and do your **** thing...shit I could care less about a code, I'm gonna do what I want on these here beats...music is about creativity and creativity has no laws or boundaries...what you eat don't make me shit, so don't worry about what someone else is doin...

OK, damn you guys are making me work!

OK, Biting does not refer to sampling in general, this is straight false and you are taking some sort of license to redefine the concept. It does not refer to sampling as a whole, but from taking ideas and samples from other producers, Kanye Bit the vocal steez from RZA. Straight up. Sampling another producer's kick is biting, it doesn't mean you did nothing to it, or that your track is wack, or you as a producer is wack. It's just biting. I jaywalk all the time, it doesn't make me a criminal, nor everything I do invalid. I am talking about the action, not the person. If as a person you do it all the time, then you're a biter, doesn't mean you are a wack producer. I don't like it, but I might like your bit beats, I will lose respect for you in that case but it says nothing of the music. What we are dealing with is "Do the ends justify the means" If you write a hot track and get millions, does it matter than you took the drums from dre, or stole you're boy's sample? I think it does matter, the ends do not justify the means. What if someone sampled your whole track and got rich? Does it matter then?

Sure no one can tell, but the means of production are of high importance to the future. Most cats on here won't be only listening to top 40 hits, yall are exposed to other music through digging, so you aren't gonna sample kicks from a song just to make a similar song.

But if you are making hip hop, you shouldn't sample hip hop to make hip hop. I wouldn't sample Tribe, I want the raw materials so I can do my thing.

but anyway, all this quoting is hard on my eyes, I'll give you a clip from a recent interview in Waxpoetics:

Waxp: Maybe you know the answer to this Rumor: People say that Large Professor is the one who turned Pete Rock onto the Tom Scott sample that they use for "T.R.O.Y."

Dante Ross: It is true, but the rumors that Large Programmed the snares is not. Pete did those. I think he showed pete the loop. It's like "you know this? you should use it." and pete did.

WaxP: Was it Normal that people would hear someone else's beat tape when they were hanging out at the studio and then go home and remake it?

That's never normal, that's actually usually cause for a beating. I know me and Prince Paul had to bang up too one time when we had two of the same beats on the same beat CD. it was just mad coincidental. Hip hop Gridlock happens though.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sample what you like, but I know that doesn't sit right with most producers I know. And do me a fovor, if it is so OK, tell everyone you know that you do that, and see what the reaction is, but make sure to let them know that it is not the norm, and that not all producers do that.

lol, you STILL ain't proved jiggedy jack......
Sampling another producer's kick is biting
So don't grab kicks from old records, another producer made that sound what it is on that record, biter..... :P
as far as what sits well with most producers, who cares, They ain't buying the product.......

Sampling another producer's kick is biting, It's just biting.
Still haven't seen ONE SHRED of evidence to support this......

If you write a hot track and get millions, does it matter than you took the drums from dre,
When you're getting millions...... Obviously millions of people liked it and don't care where you got the drums.... a SLAMMING BEAT IS A SLAMMNG BEAT...

I think it does matter,
Thats just it, you think it does matter, when it doesn't.....

What if someone sampled your whole track and got rich?
What is it that you do not understand between the differences of an ENTIRE TRACK vs a simple kick??? I already listed instances of biting...... How come you and Matt evaded my question regarding "Danger"??

But if you are making hip hop, you shouldn't sample hip hop to make hip hop.
AGAIN, point me in the direction of the Hiphop rulebook where this is stated......

I wouldn't sample Tribe, I want the raw materials so I can do my thing.
You wouldn't, but Premier used "Come Clean" for the "Danger" track...and thats ok to you now??

but anyway, all this quoting is hard on my eyes
likely excuse when you can't refute my points...

Sample what you like, but I know that doesn't sit right with most producers I know
Thats in the box thinking, limiting yourself......Just because you and some other producers you know don't think its ok doesn't make it truth...

Just imagine if Kool Herc had stayed within the boundaries of spinning records and he just let them play until the song was over, we wouldn't have scratching....

By BassLINE Tue Aug 31, 2004 8:46 pm
Just to clarify, PF Cuttin & Outloud produced "Danger" and used "Come Clean". Not Premier.

Grand Wizard Theodore introduced scratching, not Kool Herc.
